Florists select and arrange fresh and dried flowers, foliage, as well as other decorative materials for bouquets and arrangements. Florists must have an aptitude for colour and design, and an extensive knowledge of the different varieties of flowers used in arrangements. This extensive knowledge should include the cultural and religious symbolism associated with various floral species. They require good communication and organisational skills, as well as an aesthetic sense for arranging.

Duties and tasks

  • Be able to fill orders while at the same time work with the public in a storefront setting, over the phone, and online
  • Deliver or install arrangements onsite for holidays and celebrations, such as weddings, funerals, and other events
  • Receive, properly store, and care for fresh flowers
  • Select and arrange materials, including flowers, foliage, containers, packaging, and non-plant materials, such as ribbons, that are used in floral design
  • Use interpersonal skills to understand and interpret orders from customers
  • Use tools and containers to prepare materials for design and arrangement

Working conditions

Florists can work in a storefront, grocery store, or warehouse environment, depending on the type of company or business that employs them. They will also travel to various locations for deliveries and installations. Typically they use tools and a variety of materials to create arrangements while taking orders from customers. In addition to a Monday through Friday work week, florists will work weekends and holidays. On holidays when there are many orders for flowers, they will work long hours to fill all their orders.
