Forestry Logging Worker

Forestry and Logging Workers maintain, cultivate, and harvest trees to produce timber, and the raw materials they provide is used in industrial and consumer products. Their work is both physically demanding as well as hazardous, therefore this job requires a strong awareness of ones surroundings and knowledge of safety standards and practices.

Duties and tasks

  • Apply fertilisers and pesticides, and clear away brush and debris from camping areas and roadsides
  • Collect and plant seedlings to reforest lands
  • Operate tools, machines, vehicles and equipment to maintain roads, fall logs, trim broken branches, and saw and load logs
  • Plan felling of harvested trees and remove timber while minimising environmental damage
  • Remove debris and saplings in felling areas
  • Remove undesirable trees and diseased trees

Skills required

  • Ability to follow Safety Standards
  • Fit and able to perform physical and repetitive tasks
  • Knowledge of Plant Care
  • Listen and take directions
  • Operate equipment and heavy machinery

Working conditions

Forestry and Logging Workers perform tasks in the outdoors; their work may be in remote locations and they may be exposed to all kinds of weather conditions. Because of the nature of their work, they must be able to perform physical tasks such as walking long distances. They operate heavy machinery and specialised tools; sometimes they participate in fire suppression activities, so safety procedures must be followed to reduce health risks. They work full time, though emergencies may require them to work long hours.
