About this subject
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- Critically examine the foundations of violence.
- Critique the impact of violence on societal and individual health.
- Explore the role of policy in preventing and addressing violence.
- Synthesise knowledge of violence by devising a personal approach to violence and health.

- The World Health Organisation and violence
- Defining violence and the typology of violence
- Ecological framework
- Module 2: Violence and health
- Collective violence – what it is and the health impacts
- Interpersonal violence – what it is and the health impacts across the lifespan
- Self-directed violence
- Module 3: Violence in healthcare
- What is it, who is doing it, and why is it occurring?
- Management and prevention
- Policies and guidelines
In this subject, you will be introduced to the issue of violence in society across the lifespan and how it can relate to you in your healthcare agency. Violence will be examined within international, national and local contexts, exploring the social and cultural components associated with violent behaviour and current and emerging approaches to violence prevention. You will be encouraged to engage with policies related to violence and to examine the complex issue of healthcare-related violence.

- Other requirements - Teaching Arrangement: You are expected to devote around 10 hours per week to the study materials, assessment tasks and self-directed learning. Online webinar, 1-hr x 3 per semester
