About this subject
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- Explore community and social work with particular groups and communities and the services within which this work takes place.
- Describe the diversity of ways of working as a practitioner.
- Identify and analyse values and beliefs that underpin decolonising and Indigenising agendas in community and social work practice.

In this subject, you will be introduced to the diverse fields in which community and social work practice takes place. This subject aims to extend common understandings of community and social work practice by showcasing new and innovative approaches to practice at micro-, meso-, and macro- levels. Using a critical perspective, you will explore each field of practice (group or community) and the context in which it is situated. You will also learn how workers can contribute to decolonising and Indigenising agendas within different organisational settings. As an emerging community worker or social worker, this subject encourages you to situate yourself within the sector as you begin to develop your professional identity. If you are someone interested in pursuing a career in social work or learning about what social workers do, this subject offers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding and first-hand experience of the work.

You must either have successfully completed the following subject(s) before starting this subject, or currently be enrolled in the following subject(s) in a prior study period; or enrol in the following subject(s) to study prior to this subject:

- TAS-HGW101-Introduction to Social Work and Human Service Practice
- TAS-HGW111-Introduction to Community and Social Work Practice
Please note that your enrolment in this subject is conditional on successful completion of these prerequisite subject(s). If you study the prerequisite subject(s) in the study period immediately prior to studying this subject, your result for the prerequisite subject(s) will not be finalised prior to the close of enrolment. In this situation, should you not complete your prerequisite subject(s) successfully you should not continue with your enrolment in this subject. If you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite subject(s) and believe you may not complete these all successfully, it is your responsibility to reschedule your study of this subject to give you time to re-attempt the prerequisite subject(s).

You won't be able to enrol into this subject if you've already successfully completed or currently enrolled in the following subject(s) as they are considered anti-requisites due to the similarity of the content.
Additional requirements
- Other requirements - Teaching Arrangement: Independent Learning- One hour of online learning activities ; One hour of prescribed reading. All students are required to attend weekly Zoom tutorials.
Study load
- 0.125 EFTSL
- This is in the range of 10 to 12 hours of study each week.
