About this subject
On completion of this course students should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:
- Understand the policy framework relevant to research student supervision at a national and institutional level
- Critically analyse and evaluate the literature and current trends in successful research supervision
- Employ critical reflection and evaluation of supervisory practices
- Identify strategies to support research students to enable the timely completion of their course requirements
- Create strategies and resources to enhance the capacity to undertake effective and successful research supervision
- Engage with and actively contribute to research student supervision communities of practice
- Conceptualising: “who am I as a supervisor?”

- A core supervisory practice and the practicalities of recording and reflection

A high standard of supervision is central to the retention of research students and the completion of their course requirements. The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of what constitutes best practice for supervising research students and provide an opportunity for students to reflect on and enhance their own supervisory practice. Students will deepen their understanding of the processes involved, and develop their skills and personal resources to equip them with the capacity to manage the challenges of supervision. This course is designed for academic staff who are, or who intend, to supervise students undertaking all levels of research including Masters and Honours dissertations and Higher Degrees by Research.
- 5 individual posts and 5 responsive posts (3000-4000 words) (50%)
- 7 minute video and critical reflection (500 words) (20%)
- Group video (5-6 minutes) and individual reflection (150 words) (20%)
