About this subject

  • Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:

    1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students and how these may affect learning (GTSD 1.1.1);
    2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategies for differentiating teaching and ensuring student safety to support inclusive student participation and engagement by meeting the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities, including gifted and talented (GTSD 1.5.1, 3.1.1, 4.1.1, 4.5.1, 5.4.1);
    3. demonstrate a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support student engagement (GTSD 3.5.1);
    4. demonstrate knowledge of practical approaches to manage challenging behaviour (GTSD 4.3.1);
    5. demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements and teaching strategies that support participation and learning of students with disability (GTSD 1.6.1); and
    6. demonstrate competence during professional placement in a school setting (GTSD 2.3.1, 4.3.1, 5.1.1, 6.3.1).

Candidature in the Bachelor of Special and Inclusive Education Primary.
To enrol in this subject you will need to pass the Prerequisite/s. Please note as UNE results are released after the close of enrolment date, your enrolment into this subject will be withdrawn if you do not pass the prerequisite subject/s.

Additional requirements

  • Equipment requirements - Headphones or speakers (required to listen to lectures and other media). Headset, including microphone (highly recommended). Webcam (may be required for participation in virtual classrooms and/or media presentations).
  • Placement requirements - This subject requires contact with children in an educational setting. Before entering the setting all students must have completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid NSW Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW) or equivalent (for those students wishing to complete their placement outside NSW). This subject addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).
  • Software requirements - It is essential for students to have reliable internet access in order to participate in and complete your units, regardless of whether they contain an on campus attendance or intensive school component.   • Other requirements -
