About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- distinguish the established conventions of different sub-genres of crime fiction and assess the ways in which the set texts conform to and depart from those conventions;
- methodically analyse the key literary, cultural and social concepts relevant to the study of crime fiction;
- critically evaluate the causes and consequences of crime, and of the role that crime writing plays in reflecting and challenging social attitudes and responses to crime;
- appraise the cultural and theoretical contexts that each set text speaks to and from; and
- integrate advanced reading, communication, and research skills with the critical interpretation of set crime fiction texts and their contexts.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This subject is an enjoyable and intellectually stimulating exploration of one of the most popular global literary genres: crime fiction.
You will study the development of crime fiction from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, and you will examine the generic conventions and innovations as well as the reasons for our fascination with crime.
Learn about the key sub-genres of crime fiction-the classic detective, the Golden Age mystery, true crime, hard boiled noir, the thriller, and global eco-crime - which, in entertaining vast audiences, also play an important role in shaping our perceptions of crime and justice.
You will develop advanced analytical skills as you analyse the elements of the genre and contextualise the ability of crime fiction to offer insight into some of the most significant social issues of our time.
Assessment 1: Essay with Process Portfolio and Oral Verification - Assurance Task 1
Three-part assessment task: Consisting of an essay, a process portfolio of essay development materials, and an oral verification. 3250 words (equivalent); 15 mins (approx). Relates to Learning Outcome 1-5;
To pass this unit, you must achieve a minimum cumulative total of 50% across Assurance Task 1 and Assurance Task 2, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit.
Assessment 2: Oral Examination - Assurance Task 2: 1500 words (equivalent); 30 mins (approx). Relates to Learning Outcome 1-5;
To pass this unit, you must achieve a minimum cumulative total of 50% across Assurance Task 1 and Assurance Task 2, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit.
Assessment 3: Quiz. 500 words (equivalent). Relates to Learning Outcome 1-3.- Assessment 3: Quiz (10%)
