Ideas of Theatre I
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- analyse and apply an understanding of the basic elements of theatre in historical contexts;
- demonstrate an understanding of the contribution of the actor to the theatre event;
- show fundamental performance and presentation skills; and
- communicate fundamental ideas effectively in written, oral and performance forms.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This unit is the introductory subject for Theatre and Performance studies at UNE and it can also be taken as a stand-alone elective. It examines the contribution of the performer to the 'live' event. It is both practical and analytical, introducing a range of theatrical concepts and techniques through the study of a selection of canonical texts; and exploring the body and voice in performance. In this subject, students also learn to read and write about theatre as performance.

Assessment 3 Research Task and Essay: 1500 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-2,4- Performance Tasks. Includes participation at Mandatory intensive school. (40%)

- Attendance requirements - There is a mandatory 4 day intensive school for this subject. Starts 10am on the first day. Finishes at 4pm on the final day. The full timetable for the school will be distributed at the first session. Dates for this intensive school to be advised.
