About this subject
By the end of this 12-week subject, you'll be able to:
- Articulate key manifestations of mental ill- health and the different risk factors and causes from biomedical, psychodynamic and biopsychosocial perspectives.
- Explain the importance of assessing mental ill-health and of promoting and supporting mental health and wellbeing.
- Apply knowledge of key treatment modalities relevant to the management of mental disorders, including medication, lifestyle choices, counselling and psychotherapy.
- Examine various social perspectives and attitudes on mental ill- health in both historical and contemporary contexts.
- A guide to the topics you will explore in this unit will be provided in your study materials.
This subject will introduce you to the basics of mental health including current and historical mental health theories, and risk factors and disorders. It will allow you to reflect on the challenges to mental wellbeing for the individual and the community. The subject also introduces you to methods of assessment, treatment and care of people with mental ill-health. You will also become familiar with assessment tools such as the biopsychosocial model, the DSM-5-TR and the ICD-11 as well as contemporary approaches to mental health service delivery in Australia.
