Human Structure & Physiology 1
About this subject
By the end of this 12-week subject, you'll be able to:
- Define commonly accepted terminologies in relation to anatomy and physiology concepts and be able to utilise in a health context.
- Explain the levels of structural organization in relation to the human body systems.
- Describe and discuss the concept of homeostasis and the integration of body systems to maintain a stable internal environment.
- Recognise and explain the major components in relation to anatomical features and the basic functions of each of the body systems studied. This includes the integumentary, muscular and skeletal systems, including the control of human movement, cardiovascular, circulatory and respiratory systems.
- Describe the physiological processes of metabolism, oxygenation, movement, protection as essential to the maintenance of health and normal function with specific focus on the cardiovascular, circulatory and respiratory systems.
- A guide to the topics you will explore in this subject will be provided in your study materials.
Human Structure & Physiology 1 introduces the basic concepts and terminologies required to study and understand the structure and function of the human body. This subject will build on the biological foundations by exploring the interaction and organization of cells, tissues and organs which forms a basis to study the physiological integration of key body systems. The maintenance and regulation of the internal environment by homeostasis at a system level will be key to students understanding disruption and disease in later subjects. Key physiological and functional processes such as movement, metabolism, oxygenation and protection will be discussed, with body systems including the integumentary, musculoskeletal, respiratory and cardiovascular system the focus of this subject. This subject will provide the first part of evidence based foundational knowledge of human physiology to guide health practice.
