About this subject
By the end of this 12-week subject, you'll be able to:
- Describe and differentiate the complex nature of human digestion with specific reference to macronutrients.
- Identify and discuss the structure of the macronutrients and their biological role in human metabolism and health.
- Recall recommended dietary intakes and sources of the various macronutrients according to public health guidelines.
- Identify and describe contributing factors that may lead to states of excess, insufficiency or deficiency of macronutrients.
- Recognise signs and symptoms associated with states of excess, insufficiency or deficiency of macronutrients.
- A guide to the topics you will explore in this subject will be provided in your study materials.
Human Nutrition 1 (NUTR2001A) provides a foundational study of the macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein and lipids) and how these relate to human metabolism. Each individual macronutrient is studied in terms of its composition, biological function, dietary sources, recommended dietary intake and its role within the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Factors contributing to states of excess will also be studied as well as states of insufficiency and deficiency along with signs and symptoms associated with macronutrient imbalances found in individuals and populations. You will also investigate how the management of these macronutrients contributes to public health.
