By the end of this 12-week subject, you'll be able to:
- Describe fundamental principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics.
- Examine the importance of the market in the allocation of resources highlighting the pricing system in competitive markets.
- Identify the market structures such as those where imperfect competition exists, and discuss how firms in such markets make pricing and output decisions.
- Apply the concept of aggregate demand and short and long run aggregate supply at the macroeconomic level and to demonstrate an understanding of how it affects real gross domestic product (GDP), unemployment and inflation.
- Analyse fiscal and monetary policy as tools for sound macroeconomic management, focusing on their impact on real gross domestic product (GDP), unemployment and inflation.
- Identify regulatory and political stakeholders and examine how they impact the economic environment.
- A guide to the topics you will explore in this subject will be provided in your study materials.
In this subject you will explore basic microeconomic and macroeconomic principles and their application to individual households, firms and the macro economy. You will learn key concepts such as the economic question and resource allocation and apply the microeconomic concepts of demand and supply, types of market structure and profit maximisation to everyday economic problems and realworld case studies. In addition, you will analyse the macroeconomic environment through calculating and comparing GDP, inflation, unemployment and analyse how the authorities, in particular government and the Central Bank apply fiscal and monetary policies in an attempt to achieve sound macroeconomic management.
