Chinese Medicine Foundations introduces the basic concepts and terminologies required to study and understand the Chinese Medicine paradigm. This subject will explore Chinese medicine’s understanding of the human body, which is integral in guiding diagnosis and treatment. Core theories including Yin and Yang theory, 5 Element theory, and Zang-Fu theory and their application to the physiological and psychological functions of the human body, nature, and mind will be discussed. The normal functioning of each Zang Fu organ and a description of the general pathological signs and symptoms associated with each organ will be a focus of this subject. Chinese Medicine holds that the human body is composed of basic substrates such as Qi, Blood, Body Fluids and Essence. The concept, functions and generation of each substrate will be examined. In addition, the exogenous and endogenous causes of disease and the prevention of disease will be covered, with emphasis on dietary therapy. Students will learn about the energetic characteristics and key medicinal actions of a range of foods, providing students with the ability recommend specific foods to treat various organ pathologies. This subject provides the theoretical basis for understanding diagnosis and treatment of disease in latter units in the course.
