Critical Web Literacy
About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- Gather and analyse research relevant to the evolution of the web in terms of its impact on socio-cultural and industry practices, both locally and globally.
- Synthesise and apply key concepts and theoretical perspectives relevant to web communication, literacy and production.
- Talk and write critically about the influence of web media platforms on contemporary culture and the media environment more broadly.
- Demonstrate cognitive flexibility by applying creative and critical literacy skills to the analysis of web content.
- A week-by-week guide to the topics you will explore in this subject will be provided in your study materials.
This subject focuses on media literacy specific to the web, developing the critical skills and competencies required to understand, evaluate and create online media content. It will trace the evolution of the web over the past 25 years, and subsequent changes to the way knowledge is produced and shared in personal, social, creative and professional contexts. Students will be introduced to key approaches and concepts in web media, and apply literacy skills to the critical analysis of web content and production.
