About this subject
On completing this subject, students will be able to:
- Recommend evidence-based approaches to prevent and minimise cancer symptom/treatment side effects to optimise patient function and comfort.
- Develop a patient-centred, comprehensive plan of care to facilitate quality of life in partnership with the patient, their caregivers and the interprofessional team.
- Demonstrate an understanding of different approaches to communication that are timely, effective, and context specific.
- Understand legal and ethical frameworks surrounding end-of-life decision-making for people living with cancer and their caregivers.
- Identify inherent strengths in patients, caregivers, families, and communities that support coping and adjusting to change and loss.
- Communications, MDTs, symptom management, culturally supportive care and digital considerations, palliative care and advance care planning, Voluntary assisted dying, end of life, bereavement
This subject focuses on advanced symptom management and communication strategies in cancer care, preparing nurses to recommend evidence-based approaches to prevent and minimise the side effects of cancer treatments, optimising patient function and comfort. Students will learn to develop patient-centred, comprehensive care plans in collaboration with patients, their caregivers, and the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to enhance quality of life. The unit covers various approaches to effective, timely, and context-specific communication, emphasising the importance of legal and ethical frameworks in end-of-life decision-making. Additionally, students will be equipped to identify the inherent strengths in patients, caregivers, families, and communities, supporting their ability to cope with and adjust to change and loss.
