About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Formulate a placement plan, including objectives, responsibilities and outputs.
- Apply knowledge, skills and attitudes from a health science discipline (i.e., Health Promotion, Public Health, Health and Sustainability, Rehabilitation Counselling, Sports Counselling and Athlete Welfare, or Health, Wellbeing, and Performance) to field placement activities under supervision.
- Reflect on the experience of work-based learning in the field.
- Evaluate the placement setting as a site for continuous learning using relevant ethics, practice and discipline-based frameworks.

In this subject, you will undertake a work-based placement, either in a relevant external organisation or agency, or internally at La Trobe University. This allows you to engage in approved tasks designed to achieve specific learning objectives relating to continuous and life-long learning in a service-teaching mode. The aim of the subject is to provide you with an opportunity to interpret and apply theoretical concepts, in a supervised setting, to expand relevant skills, knowledge and attitudes. Your placement could include projects and activities in a wide range of programs and services, including mental health, disability, multicultural health, aged care, LGBTIQ health, Indigenous health, homelessness and housing, and refugee health. The seminar series accompanying the placement will orient you to professional and practical considerations of a work environment and allow you to gain a broad perspective about potential employment possibilities.
- Placement objectives and outputs agreement pertaining to the project the student will undertake at the placement organisation (equivalent 500 words) (20%)
- Critical learning journal report (1,500-words) (40%)
- Placement completion Hurdle: Pass or fail evaluation by placement supervisor of placement in relation to professional competencies including behaviour, regular and timely attendance, individual contribution and team work. (0%)
- Critical continuous learning site report (1750-words) (40%)
- Hurdle requirements: pre-placement briefing attendance, compliance with pre-placement documentation and immunisation requirements, and weekly contact with the LTU supervisor. (0%)

Prerequisites: Students must be undertaking Health promotion major or Public health major in HBHSO or AZ001O.
Past La Trobe University students who have previously completed PHE3PFA (Participatory Field Study A), PHE3PFB (Participatory Field Study B) and PHE3PFC (Participatory Field Study C) are ineligible to enrol in this subject.
Additional requirements
- Placement requirements - Approximately equivalence 10-15 days (8hr day) of 80-120 hours off-site
- Other requirements - Students must meet all subject requirements, including hurdles: Compliance with pre-placement WIL documentation and immunisation requirements, successful completion of minimum 80 hours (maximum 120 hours) on placement (pass grade required), and attainment of >50 marks for total coursework assessments. Any face-to-face placements need to be undertaken in Australia (and not overseas).
