About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Describe key stages of linguistic development in children and adults.
- Analyse linguistic production in relation to developmental stages.
- Apply different theories and models to account for language acquisition processes.
- Evaluate the role of social context in language acquisition processes.

- Acquisition of second languages, including heritage languages
- Acquisition of literacy
- Theories and research approaches to language acquisition
Whether you have learnt one language or many languages, this subject will explore how we acquire language in different contexts and at different points in life. From before birth, to infancy, early schooling years and beyond, this subject examines the social and cognitive processes behind language acquisition. This subject is useful for anyone who plans to work with children and for anyone who wants to learn more about their own language acquisition.
- Reflection on personal experience with concepts from the first two weeks of the subject (800 words equivalent) (20%)
- Two activities related to content from weeks 3-6 of the subject (800 words equivalent) (20%)
- An analysis of child language acquisition and report on findings (1600 words equivalent) (40%)
