About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Integrate accounting knowledge and skills to solve practical accounting problems in diverse contexts.
- Critically evaluate the performance of an organisation, including its processes, products, and people, and develop strategies for continual improvement.
- Apply appropriate technologies and data analytics tools to strengthen internal control, planning, performance, and evidence-based decision-making processes.
- Communicate accounting information clearly and effectively, both individually and as part of a team, to various stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Organisational structure and responsibility accounting
- Strategy and the Balanced Scorecard
- Performance measurement systems for cost, revenue and investment centres
- Customer value, activity-based costing and customer profitability analysis
- Activity-based management, operational efficiency and quality management
- Organisational learning, growth and incentive systems
- Sustainability and environmental accounting

Business problems in practice are often complex and require accountants to have integrated knowledge from different fields in order to analyse the root cause of problem and develop a solution that benefits different stakeholders. This capstone subject is designed to give you an opportunity to integrate your knowledge from different subjects and skills into action, and apply what you have learnt in the classroom to solve real-world business problems. For example, you will apply strategic management accounting principles to evaluate the performance of organisations, including its products or services, and people. You will use data analytics tools to assist data-driven decision making. You will exercise professional judgements in the context of financial and non-financial information disclosure. You will undertake practical accounting projects that simulate the management of an organisation to prepare you for your transition to the workplace.
- Management report (equivalent to 1500 words per student) (40%)
- Presentation of strategic plan and performance measurement system. Students will have a teamwork component and individual performance in the presentation (equivalent to 1000 words per student) (20%)
- Individual practical demonstration & presentation (2000 words) (40%)
