Human Pathophysiology
About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Explain how cellular, tissue and systemic responses to injury contribute to the development and progression of common human diseases.
- Apply principles of general pathophysiology, including inflammation, immune dysfunction, tissue repair, neoplasia, vascular disorders and fluid imbalance, to explain disturbances in normal body function.
- Interpret pathophysiological changes in selected body systems to explain relationships between disease mechanisms, clinical features and likely outcomes.
- Communicate pathophysiological concepts and disease information accurately for scientific, professional and non-specialist audiences using appropriate language and formats.
- Cell Injury, Inflammation and Healing
- Blood and fluid disorders
- Neoplasia and Cancer
- Respiratory and Neurological Diseases
- Systemic and Musculoskeletal Diseases
In this subject, you will develop an integrated understanding of the pathological processes that contribute to human disease across the lifespan. Building on foundational knowledge of human biology and disease mechanisms, you will examine how cellular injury, inflammation, immune responses, tissue repair, neoplasia, fluid imbalance, vascular disorders and metabolic dysfunction contribute to disturbances in normal body function. You will apply these principles to selected disorders affecting major body systems, including cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and endocrine systems. Through authentic disease-focused learning activities, you will interpret pathophysiological information, connect mechanisms of disease with clinical features and likely outcomes, and communicate disease processes appropriately to both scientific and non-specialist audiences.
- Communicating Disease project (800 words equivalent) (25%)
- Communication piece (500 word equivalent) (15%)
- One 2 hour exam (2500-words equivalent). (60%)

Study load
- 0.125 EFTSL
- This is in the range of 10 to 12 hours of study each week.
