What you'll learn

Upon successful completion of the degree, you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate deep knowledge and critical understanding of key debates and thinking in the field of regulation;
  2. Analyse, synthesise and communicate complex regulatory issues, informed by both theory and empirical knowledge from multiple perspectives;
  3. Reflect critically on the global and national level regulatory landscape, institutional interests, key actors, and policy outcomes in contemporary societies;
  4. Identify and apply appropriate research methods to national and international regulatory challenges;
  5. Communicate effectively to external audiences the challenges facing the regulatory environment and develop innovative policy recommendations to complex problems.

Entry requirements

Higher education

At a minimum, all applicants must meet program-specific academic/non-academic requirements, and English language requirements. Admission to most ANU programs is on a competitive basis.

· Bachelor degree or international equivalent with GPA 5/7; or

· Bachelor degree or international equivalent with GPA 4/7 and a minimum of 3 years full-time equivalent work experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1 in a field related to the program; or

· Bachelor degree or international equivalent with GPA 4/7 and a Graduate Certificate or international equivalent with a GPA of 4/7; or

· Graduate Diploma or international equivalent with a GPA 4/7; or

· 48 units of courses in a postgraduate program with a GPA of 4/7; or

· Graduate Certificate or international equivalent with a GPA of 4/7 and a minimum of 3 years full-time equivalent work experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1 in a field related to the program; or

· Graduate Records Examination (GRE) General test, completed no more than 5 years before the time of application, with a minimum score of 155 for Verbal Reasoning, 155 for Quantitative Reasoning and 4.0 in Analytical Writing and a minimum of 3 years full-time equivalent work experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1 in a field related to the program; or

· A minimum of 10 years full-time equivalent work experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1 in a field related to the program.


In line with the university's admissions policy and strategic plan, an assessment for admission may include competitively ranking applicants on the basis of specific academic achievement, English language proficiency and diversity factors.

Credit for previous study or work

Applicants with a Bachelor Degree, Bachelor degree with Honours, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 24 units.

Description

Regulation: National and International Regimes, one of the Master of Public Policy specialisations, contributes to the design of better regulation through your understanding of national and global regulatory environments. The specialisation is designed to provide pathways for policy making and research careers in government, global institutions, and NGOs, enable you to understand regulation and governance in complex environments, and identify and apply appropriate research methods to regulatory challenges. If you would like to pursue roles in policy making and research, this specialisation is for you.


Regulation keeps us safe and protects our economies. With your critical understanding of regulation and governance in complex environments, you will be equipped to identify regulatory challenges and assess regulation performance. By exploring the core theories and methodologies that influence the study of regulation and global governance, you will gain insight into the approaches used to shape regulation, the role of stakeholders in governance, decision-making procedures, and the impact of ideology from national and international perspectives. The program will immerse you in contemporary issues, including international investment law, trade policy, intellectual property rights, health equity, and restorative justice. You will graduate with cross-disciplinary engagement skills in criminology, international relations, law, political science, public health, and sociology.
