When asked why they are involved in politics, many Australian politicians will answer that they want to make the country a better place, that they want to improve people’s welfare and wellbeing, that they want to make a difference. We don’t have to look far, however, to observe entrenched inequality, social division, unmet human needs and unfulfilled lives. This tension between the promise of politics and the lack of responsiveness of the political system to a large portion of the Australian population, and its consequences for inequality and human wellbeing, is the focus of this unit. Students explore these inequalities, and their political causes and consequences, through the lenses of race, nation, class and gender.

Consider the politics of fairness in modern Australia. Dig into the treatment of Indigenous Australians and new arrivals. Question if men and women receive equal opportunities. Explore the politics of same sex relationships. See connections and consequences. 

Australian Politics, Inequality and Wellbeing

The subject was formerly known as PICX860 Geopolitics and Geostrategy
The international security order is in a period of rapid transformation. This subject examines the major global geopolitical trends, including in the Indo-Pacific, the greater Middle East, Europe, as well as Latin America and Africa. It also analyses the influence of those dynamics on the geostrategies of key countries. Aside from exposing students to the concept of geopolitics as an analytical instrument, the subject will deal with a series of case studies, including the evolving US-Sino rivalry; the Sino-India great power game; the geopolitics of Southeast Asia; the rise of Iran, and the emerging roles of Saudi Arabia and Turkey; the question of the re-emergence of Russia and Germany as great powers; and the Subjected Kingdom in times of Brexit. The subject will provide students with in-depth understanding about the key contemporary global geostrategic dynamics and the implications for regional and international stability.

Get a global perspective on the political issues that affect places like the Middle East and Europe. Flick through case studies from across the years. Discuss contemporary points such as Brexit and the re-emergence of Russia and Germany’s power.

The Geopolitics of Asia

One of the most pervasive contemporary security challenges is the threats to the state and its population from political violence emerging from within state borders. Internal sources of armed conflict--such as communal violence, subversion and insurgency--have significant implications for national, regional and global security, and are increasingly acknowledged to be the most important foreign policy challenges and threats in the world today. This subject examines the strategies which underpin the use of political violence by state and non-state actors, including coercion, co-optation, undercutting and concession. It will use a range of international case studies to examine the causal factors behind the campaigns of political violence perpetrated by states and non-state actors and the responses of targets.

Explore the reason why internal sources of armed conflict have become the most important foreign policy challenges in the world today. Learn how to explain key concepts of strategy, negotiation, terrorism and political coercion.
