In this subject you are introduced to the steps involved in designing and creating a software solution to simple real-life problems. To enable students to design a program, the subject introduces the way to break down the problems into smaller parts and analyse them methodically by using simple techniques such as drawing flowcharts. You will be introduced to the Python programming language as a means of creating executable program code to implement working software solutions.

Programming Environment

This subject extends students&#39; knowledge and experience of programming. It introduces dynamic data structures, foundational collection abstract data types, and computational algorithms and techniques. Programming is undertaken in Python and Java, and topics include: references, memory management, self-referential data structures, abstract data types and their implementation, and an introduction to algorithm complexity.

This subject aims to present a coherent view on the role of knowledge and strategic information management in organisations from a multidisciplinary perspective. Students will gain an appreciation of the sources of information, unstructured and semi-structured knowledge and learn current techniques that permit knowledge and information to be applied to perform organisational activities. This subject will provide students with an understanding of how to strategically manage and govern the ICT function in business organisations. It builds on themes relating to managing ICT as an organisational resource and discusses the ICT function from strategy and governance perspectives. Students will develop skills and knowledge relating to the use of the latest technologies for managing information and knowledge and how to strategically manage and govern the ICT function in business organisations. The subject also emphasises the relationship between theoretical knowledge and its practical application using a real organisation.

Knowledge and Information Strategic Management

Information systems is no longer an option for businesses, it has become a necessity. Organisations are making significant investments in information systems to create business value. Information systems within organisations have evolved at a rapid rate, and this subject provides students with an understanding of both the foundations of business information systems and recent developments of information systems for business.The development of business information systems is generally a collaborative project both within a department and between other departments, and this subject will discuss the challenges of working collaboratively within an organisation and develop these skills through teamwork activities and assessments. Lastly, while information systems provide a wealth of opportunity, the subject will also alert students to the risks and limitations of information systems for businesses and develop their critical thinking by demonstrating the ethical dimensions of information systems for business.

Information Systems for Business

In this subject, you will develop a working knowledge of health information professional responsibilities concerning ethical, legal, compliance, and governance obligations in the computing field and healthcare information industry. These include the ethical and legal frameworks underpinning the creation, collection, reporting, management and uses of health data, related documents, systems, and technologies. Key topics include: privacy; security; confidentiality; access; e-health; ownership; data linkage; and information and documentation issues surrounding biomedical and health technologies and clinical practice. Students develop ethical and legal understandings of: electronic and paper-based health records; managing the organisation-wide privacy function; information systems and services; and the legal implications and responsibilities inherent in health information management work.  This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for third-year undergraduate students, and for students who have completed all first- and second-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.

Ethics and Law of Health Information

In this subject, you will develop higher level classification skills to a level of competency that qualifies you professionally, as a workforce entry-level clinical/medical coder. You will further develop your working knowledge of medical science and terminology and be introduced to common clinical documentation deficiencies and practice clinical documentation improvement skills. You will be introduced to the health classification-financial relationship within the context of Activity Based Funding and the National Funding Model and develop a deeper understanding of the classification system by examining Diagnostic-Related Group (DRG) and National Weighted Activity Unit (NWAU) assignment. You will have exposure to State and Territory specific guidelines relevant to admitted care data items, which can impact on coding. This subject is graded only as a Pass (P) or Fail (F). A mark of 75% or greater is required to achieve a Pass grade in line with industry standards and expectations. Recommended for students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.

Health Classification C

In this subject, you will explore governance functions in the health sector, including accountability, risk management, accreditation, and quality and safety management, with a focus on health information and supporting technologies within system and organisational contexts. You will develop an understanding of how health information is managed at multiple levels to support quality of care and service delivery. This includes examining individual patient records as evidence of care, aggregated data to measure and evaluate healthcare processes and outcomes, clinical documentation for diagnostic and therapeutic decisions, and coded data used to monitor and improve patient safety.

Health Information Governance

In this subject, you are introduced to the broad concepts of health data and system development lifecyle (SDLC) and the purpose, scope, design and functionalities of health information systems. You will explore the theoretical concepts behind systems planning, analysis, design, implementation, evaluation, support and maintenance of the systems development lifecycle including issues that impact systems, data and information security. Through your assessments, you will demonstrate technical skills in systems planning, analysis and design phases of the SDLC by creating user stories and data flow diagrams as well as evaluating systems design. You will develop an understanding of how health professionals interact with the health information systems development lifecycle.

Health Information Systems Analysis and Design

Students will be introduced to the rapidly expanding and influential field of information technology which comprises various types of technologies in computers (both hardware and software) and computer networks. It is therefore relevant to students in a wide range of disciplines: for examples, health sciences, business, engineering and technology. Students will be taught the fundamental principles of computer operations, different types of input/output and storage devices, computer networks including Local and Wide area networks, information systems, Database, the Internet, the World Wide Web and HTML. Students will acquire the knowledge and practical skills in information technology and be able to apply them to their field of study.
