War and Peace: Introduction to Conflict Analysis and Peacebuilding

Cyber Law and Policy

War is a primary challenge to international security, peace, and the realisation of human rights. Conflict resolution and peacebuilding have been used to respond to conflicts both between and within states. In this subject we examine the nature and dynamics of political violence paying attention to armed conflict between and within states and structural violence caused by inequality, colonisation, and environmental degradation. This subject also introduces students to the main approaches to conflict resolution and peacebuilding including peace enforcement, state-building, transitional justice, and civil society advocacy. We look at the international, regional, and domestic mechanisms of resolving conflict and account for the perspectives of women, youth, and Indigenous people. Students will learn how to analyse the dimensions of conflict, conduct a conflict assessment, and understand the regional, international, economic, and social dynamics of wars. They will also learn to envision practices of conflict resolution and peacebuilding in relation to a conflict of their choosing. This is a level 2 subject. This subject introduces students to laws and policies regulating Cyberspace. It invites students to critically evaluate the sufficiency and effectiveness of laws, policies and industry self-regulation in addressing challenges to government, business and society in an increasingly online world. The subject specifically examines Australian and International Law and practice in this area paying attention to perspectives from legal, political and technological experts.

In this subject you will explore the origins and historical development of terrorism. From the People&#39;s Will to Al Qaeda, we will provide a survey of the most significant movements that have engaged in terror. In the subject we will emphasise the importance of ideas and chart the significance of anarchism, revolutionary socialism, national liberation and religious extremism. Particular attention will be paid to primary texts from influential exponents of violence, including Sergei Nechaev, Frantz Fanon and Carlos Marighela. You will debate the problems of developing a meaningful definition of terrorism; investigate the ideas and material conditions that have given rise to various forms of political violence; consider the challenge of formulating an effective and just response to terrorist attacks; and locate modern terrorism in a broad, comparative historical perspective.This is a level 3 subject. In this subject, you will study the twentieth century, often characterised as the most violent century in history. We will consider world wars, including atrocities committed by the Nazis, attempted genocides of Indigenous and other peoples, and forced labour regimes using a global perspective. How did individuals, states and societies deal with atrocity and violence, both at the time, in its aftermath and in memory? We will evaluate the philosophical underpinnings that justified colonialism, the mass enslavement of human beings, and the thinking that allowed people to be traded as commodities and killed en masse. You will develop a sophisticated and complex understanding of the historical origins of human violence. You will explore why violence recurs and how it has been a driving force in history.This is a level 2 subject.
