From online news to social networking sites, the diversity of ways that we utilise the internet is extensive; yet how many people understand how this technology works and how to create a web page?  This subject introduces you to the fundamentals and modern concepts of web development, equipping you with skills that are increasingly valuable as the internet becomes further embedded in our lives.  You will learn how web servers and clients communicate using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). You will also explore the formal languages used for web site development: HyperText Markup Language (HTML) used to generate the structure of web pages, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to apply stylistic features that enhance web page presentation, and Javascript and jQuery to provide dynamic user interactions.  Techniques such as server-side scripting (PHP) with session management are also discussed.
