The University of New England offers a flexible approach to the study of law. UNE boasts one of Australia&#39;s largest law schools outside a capital city, as well as being an early adopter of innovative technology in the delivery of its law programs. The Bachelor of Laws (4 year) is designed for people who are new to university study or to the study of law, including school leavers or people who want to change careers or get a qualification.The Bachelor of Laws is accredited by the Legal Profession Admission Board of NSW for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW and mutual recognition legislation extends admission to other Australian jurisdictions. After completion of academic qualifications in law, there is a range of employment options from which to choose. Graduates who wish to be admitted to practice as a solicitor, barrister or legal practitioner anywhere in Australia will also have to undertake a course of professional legal training (PLT). This can consist of approximately half a year&#39;s full‐time training undertaken internally or externally, or of equivalent part‐time training. In some jurisdictions, it may be possible to do articles of clerkship instead. Because the system adopted varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, enquiries should be made to the admission authority in the state or territory in which you intend to practice; this is usually a committee of the Supreme Court of that State or Territory or a special body set up to administer admissions to the legal profession. Additional information can be found on the <a href="https://www.une.edu.au/about-une/faculty-of-science-agriculture-business-and-law/school-of-law/current-students/legal-profession-admission-board" target="_blank">School of Law page</a>.Please note: students will only be admitted to the full LLB degree upon successful completion of the first four open subjects with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.2.The Bachelor of Laws aims to graduate students who can demonstrate:<ol><li>understanding and knowledge of Australian law and awareness of indigenous, international and theoretical perspectives;</li><li>competence in using legal research and analytical skills that equip them to work in the legal profession or in a broad range of law related occupations;</li><li>the ability to take a strategic approach to problem-solving by applying critical and innovative thinking to complex legal issues and situations;</li><li>competence in oral and written communication;</li><li>the ability to work independently and in groups; and</li><li>professional judgment and knowledge of the ethical responsibilities associated with having completed a law degree.</li></ol>

Bachelor of Laws (4 Years)

This program meets one of the knowledge requirements of becoming a registered Migration Agent in Australia. The Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) recognises Griffith University as a provider of the Graduate Diploma of Australian Migration Law and Practice. Applicants intending to register should also ensure they meet OMARA requirements for registration. Only Australian citizens (or those holding permanent resident visas) can register with OMARA.Our courses are specifically designed to equip emerging migration agents to meet the Occupational Competency Standards for Registered Migration Agents. Graduates are equipped with a broad range of knowledge about the theoretical and practical aspects required to succeed in this occupation. Our program and course design, as well as our online capstone preparation module are important components in supporting students as part of their own study for the independent capstone exam (see OMARA website for details).As a registered Migration Agent, there are a range of opportunities to specialise in certain areas or assist clients with a broad range of important work.Registered Migration Agents have a great deal of career flexibility, with the ability to work in large corporate settings, or to run their own sole trader business from home.This program is open both to lawyers and to those without a legal background - specifically those who wish to become a registered migration agent . As a currently registered migration agent wishing to complete the program, you should also note that it will provide credit towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements. The program may also offer credit to lawyers for CPD. You should check with the relevant law society in this regard.This program is also suitable for people working in industries where having knowledge of migration law is important, including accountants, engineers, ICT professionals and paralegals.Note: Graduates of this award intending to apply to the <a href="https://www.mara.gov.au/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA)</a> for registration as a Migration Agent must also pass a separate capstone exam. OMARA will provide details of this separate requirement on its website.

Graduate Diploma of Australian Migration Law and Practice

Under the guidance of our lecturers you will study legal research methods, complete two major research projects in areas of law you are passionate about and make a difference to society in a meaningful way. Collectively, our lecturers have a wealth of experience in a diverse range of backgrounds, including criminal law, human rights, international and comparative law, ethics, family and succession law, environmental and natural resources law, commercial and taxation law, and public law and policy.

Bachelor of Laws (Honours)

Graduate sooner with our Bachelor of Laws. You have the option to fast-track your study and complete this degree in 2 years full-time over 6 consecutive semesters. Explore a range of law specialisations by undertaking electives in your areas of interest, and prepare yourself to practice as a solicitor or barrister in Queensland, or a legal practitioner elsewhere in Australia. This degree is accredited by the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board as an academic qualification for admission as a lawyer in Queensland.

Bachelor of Laws

The Diploma in Paralegal Studies course provides students with the opportunity to complete a course dedicated to preparatory skills and studies in law, regardless of their educational background.This course will be attractive to students who would like to graduate with a diploma by completing 8 units. This course also offers students who wish to continue their studies in law the opportunity to transfer to the Bachelor of Legal Studies or to take advantage of the pathway to a law degree (provided they satisfy the GPA requirement). Diploma in Paralegal Studies

The three-year Bachelor of Laws from Charles Sturt University is an internationally unique undergraduate law degree. As well as teaching the traditional law curriculum, including a wide range of electives such as technology law, family law and succession law, the course incorporates Indigenous Australian content, embeds cultural competence and includes specialised regional law topics.Intensive teachingThe degree is available entirely online and there are no on campus requirements. Contract Law

A subject suitable for both law and non-law students, this subject introduces students to Indigenous people’s experience with the legal system in Australia and selected other jurisdictions (United States, Canada and New Zealand), and the interactions between non-Indigenous and Indigenous legal systems. With regard to both the historical and contemporary setting, the subject examines these themes in a variety of contexts including land rights and native title, Indigenous peoples and environmental management, the criminal justice system, and Indigenous ownership of intellectual and cultural property. The subject matter is rapidly changing, and new issues such as the negotiation of a treaty in Australia between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, and constitutional law reform to give Indigenous peoples a voice in the Commonwealth parliament, are considered. This subject is designed to familiarise you with the advanced and specialist knowledge of interviewing in the context of the practice of law, advocacy and the preparation for litigation. You will gain a broad understanding of theories of psychology, law, communication and linguistics relevant to interviewing and recognising the legal, social, cultural and political factors that may impact on questioning and interviewing different cohorts. Responding and successfully resolving disputes is a core skill for lawyers. Skills in dispute resolution add value to your role in a wide range of workplaces. This subject equips you with a thorough understanding of ADR processes both in criminal and civil matters such as arbitration, negotiation, conciliation and mediation. The subject also examines Australian Indigenous Peoples&#39; dispute resolution processes. There are opportunities to critically analyse disputes and evaluate alternatives to litigation. You may build your capabilities in the art of effective listening and negotiating. These are fundamental bases of ADR. These skills are in high demand across many industries.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

This subject introduces you to the key elements of domestic Australian and Indigenous legal systems, and considers how they compare with other legal systems around the world. You will gain an introduction into how law is made in Australia by courts and the legislature, within Australia’s constitutional framework, and consider how Tasmania’s legislature and the courts have addressed contemporary and historical social issues. You will consider how a person’s place within society influences the way they perceive and evaluate law and will be introduced to several ethical issues and rules that arise for different actors within the legal system. This will be your first opportunity to learn skills that are fundamental to your future studies and careers in law: working effectively in small groups; critical thinking; how to read and take good notes from class and texts; and how to manage study time to achieve success in law.

Public international law permeates most areas of Australian law and it is therefore essential for law graduates to have a solid grounding in the sources and methodology of international law. This subject develops students&#39; understanding of the sources of international law, state responsibility, international dispute settlement, and treaty making. It introduces students to specific fields of international law, including international humanitarian law, environmental, human rights and Indigenous issues, the Antarctic Treaty system, the use of force and the relationship between international and Australian law. The subject fosters students&#39; interest and engagement with international law by exploring links with a range of contemporary contentious political issues both nationally and internationally. A key component of the subject is to introduce and practise a range of fundamental legal research skills that are essential to investigating International Law studies and wider legal studies.
