Students learn about the editor&#39;s role and profession, the publishing process and editorial project management; and they learn and practise the skills needed for professional proofreading and copyediting, including language skills, on the page and the screen. The representation of the self and of others is central to a broad range of written genres and forms. This practice-based subject, taught by practitioners, introduces you to writing for live performance.It is broadly conceived, from traditional plays and monologues to metatheatrical works and musical theatre; from ‘high’ forms such as the contemporary epic to low forms such as cabaret.Through creative and critical readings, incremental in-class exercises and collaborative writing workshops, you will explore a range of techniques, theories, and practices to craft performance texts.This is a Level 3 subject: please consider the subject prerequisites before enrolling.

The complex processes, strategies, attitudes and language that characterise academic learning, research and writing are identified, discussed, practiced and applied in relation to set tasks to build a foundation for academic success.

Introduction to Screenwriting

Students entering university can feel overwhelmed by how much reading they need to complete before synthesising and translating this information into their own written work. How can you read efficiently, for understanding and analysis? How do you transform what you have read into your own original writing that is clear and persuasive? In this unit you will learn how to read for information, understanding, and critique. You will be introduced to four techniques of reading: inspectional, analytical, syntopical, and close reading. You will then learn techniques of thesis-driven composition and improve your understanding of the ways in which sentences, paragraphs, and arguments are structured. Learn how to use others’ ideas to strengthen your claims without compromising your own voice as a writer.

Techniques in Academic Reading and Writing

This subject provides students with the opportunity to apply their existing knowledge and skills in order to publish real books, by real authors, for real readers. Depending on the books accepted for publication, where these books are in the publishing process, and the skills and interests of individual students, the subject will vary from semester to semester, as well as from student to student. Nonetheless, every student will be involved in at least two of the following publishing processes: acquisitions, editorial, design, print production, digital production, marketing, and sales. Students will also learn about project management, collaborative problem-solving, financial planning, brand development, social media marketing, and more, as these are all required to operate a real publishing house. The skills developed and practised in this unit are transferrable to a wide variety of industries and workplaces.
