This subject introduces students to law, government, and criminal justice in Australia. It explores how laws are made, the influence of politics on law reform, the role of the media, protections for human rights, and the elements of criminal responsibility. It considers the historical treatment of First Nations peoples in Australia&#39;s legal system and the role that law plays in promoting justice and accountability. This knowledge provides a foundation for further study on criminal law and justice systems.

This subject explains the laws introduced by the Australian government in response to terrorism, from those enacted in response to the 9/11 attacks to those recently passed in response to Islamic State. It focuses on theories of prevention, the impact of these laws on Australia&#39;s criminal justice system, and questions of accountability and human rights. The course also considers policy strategies for countering radicalisation and violent extremism.This subject examines legal responses to threats of terrorism in Australia. It explains these through a framework examining grievances, conspiracies, harms, policing, intelligence, groups, leaders, lone actors and platforms. Students will understand diverse threats of terrorism and extremism, including Islamist fundamentalism, right-wing extremism, and growing threats related conspiracy thinking. Students will critically analyse Australia&#39;s legal responses to these threats and their compliance with human rights.

For many, the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., on 11 September 2001 are defining moments in history. These attacks were undeniably seminal events in contemporary history, and we find commentators and scholars talk in terms of &quot;before&quot; and &quot;after&quot; 9/11. Not surprisingly, terrorism is a topic that seemingly remains ever-present in our collective minds. As the authors of Terrorism: A Critical Introduction state: &quot;In the twenty-first century, terrorism, it seems, is everywhere. It is in the headlines and stories of our newspapers, websites and nightly television news, and in the plotlines and characters of films, TV programmes and plays we watch, and the thriller novels and comics we read&quot; (R. Jackson et.al., 2011: p. 1).It is, of course, important to place contemporary terrorism in historical context, to understand how political violence has manifested itself throughout history, what impact it had on communities and how societies dealt with the threat. By looking at the history of terrorism, this subject will explore the broad &amp; shifting contours of political violence from ancient times through to the rise of modern-day Jihadist terrorism. The subject will introduce students to moments of terrorism within a broad chronological and geographical framework. It will challenge students to consider the definition of terrorism and the notion of &#39;one person&#39;s terrorist is another person&#39;s freedom fighter&#39;, while exploring the key questions of how, why and with what consequences terrorism has been constructed.

View defining moments of terror through an historical lens. Going as far back as the Ancient and Medieval Worlds, you’ll observe political violence through history, reflecting on the social shifts in perspectives and interpretations of terrorism.

This subject is designed to consolidate the knowledge gained in the previous degrees by analysing a live crime problem. Students working as a group will generate hypotheses, apply various analytic techniques to test these, prepare a report to be presented to the relevant command team.
This subject will focus on a managerial model used by police and other enforcement agencies known as Intelligence Led Policing. The core concepts of of the 3i model (interpreting the criminal environment, influencing decision makers and impacting the criminal environment) underpin the learning objective and the assessment.
