Professional Writing

Writing for Media introduces you to the practice of writing for various media platforms and audiences. The focus of the subject will be to teach you how to write a range of media texts and to develop skills in editing and honing your work. The key learning outcomes of writing concisely, effective revision, distilling information and sound knowledge of grammar and style are transferable across a range of vocations. You will develop a folio of written work. This is a level 1 subject.  This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation in either online or face-to-face tutorials weekly. These classes may fall in business hours.

Writing for Media

This subject is designed for those who wish to write creatively and focuses on the craft of fiction, and especially the short story. Students will draft and edit two short stories during the semester and provide feedback to other students on their draft stories. We read and discuss selected Australian short fiction in different styles, voices, and genres, and do hands-on writing exercises in class. It provides a theoretical framework and practical skills for writers and readers.This is a level 2 subject. Writing Fiction

This subject offers you an introduction to the historical contexts and form of the gothic. Beginning with the key 18th century novels of Lewis and Radcliffe and ending with various 21st century incarnations of the gothic, you will explore the way in which key elements and conventions of the gothic (such as the uncanny, the vampire and the zombie, masculine and feminine gothic, and the monstrous) develop over the history of the genre. You will also explore some of the ways in which the gothic has been translated and adapted in popular culture, in television, and on film.This is a level 3 subject. Reading The Gothic

In this subject you will be introduced to the essential building blocks of language: the sounds and sound systems (phonetics and phonology), how words and sentences are structured (morphology and syntax)and how we understand meaning (semantics). Employing the analytical tools of linguistics, you will begin applying them to the development of a new language of your own imagining. The inspiration will come from a range of human languages, including major world languages, minoritized and endangered languages, and constructed languages.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Imagining Language

What is language? Where did it come from, how do we learn it, and what do we use it for? This subject introduces students to a range of basic topics in the study of language: how to define language, the basic structure of language, language in the brain, how to distinguish languages from dialects, how language might have evolved, how children and adults acquire language, how and why languages change, and how language conveys social and cultural meaning, and different modalities of language (speech and sign).This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Foundations of Language

In this subject, you are introduced to key forms of creative nonfiction, and the techniques and tools required to write these well. We conduct interlinked experiments in writing and, importantly, reading across a wide range of forms. You will read and interrogate many genres, including memoir, travel, reportage and history. You are encouraged to engage critically with ideas about nonfiction, including: the idea of the narrator and narrative voice; authenticity, objectivity and truth; the relationship between self and others, places, nature and identity; form and genre; humanness and memory; pasts and presents. This is a level 2 subject. Creative Non Fiction

Why do we return to some stories over and over again? How do these stories change when they change form? In this subject you are introduced to the theory and practice of adaptation.  We will explore a range of genres--from the Regency romance to the horror film--and uncover some of the ways in which texts are adapted across a variety of media forms. By the end of this subject, you should have developed an understanding of the Adaptation industry, and of how the meanings of texts can change when they shift in time, in place, and in media.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Adaptations: From Novel to Netflix

How does representation shape our understanding of bodies? How have ideas about gender, sexuality, race and disability been informed by visual culture? In this subject you will interrogate art, film and media from a range of time periods and cultural contexts to see how dominant concepts of the body and identity are communicated. From painting to protest, from film to fashion, you will look at examples of visual culture that have challenged convention and changed the way we understand our own and others’ bodies. Across the learning materials and in the weekly seminar you will engage critically with a range of visual and textual sources and formulate independent arguments across critical and creative tasks. This subject introduces you to key approaches in the study of visual cultures, and interdisciplinary knowledge relevant to range of other majors including History, Gender Sexuality and Diversity Studies, English, and Sociology.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Representing Bodies: Gender, Sexuality and Identities

This subject introduces you to writing short screen and radio plays. It takes a playful and experimental approach to exploring narrative forms for screen and radio such as place, image, and character. This subject will suit those who are new to script writing, as well as those who have had some script writing experience. Your creative work will be informed by critical readings and case studies of short film and radio scripts and productions, and your writing will be developed in a supportive, collaborative environment. These activities will help strengthen your ability to craft stories across all genres, and to critically reflect on your work.We will also consider the opportunities to produce and distribute short films and radio plays, which have increased dramatically in the last few years.This is a Level 2 subject: please consider the subject prerequisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions, either online or face-to-face, with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Screenplay/Radioplay: An Introduction To Scriptwriting

In this subject, you will acquire the skills and knowledge to begin the development and writing of a full length theatre performance text, series pilot or feature film script, by presenting a pitch, a critical treatment of concept, a folio of selected scenes, and workshopped readings.This subject explores script writing as a range of practices that are culturally and historically shaped. It combines critical readings of theoretical texts, plays and screenplays with the workshopping of your writing in a supportive, collaborative environment. We will also survey local and national script development and script production opportunities for emerging writers.This is a level 3 subject.
