Writing for Media introduces you to the practice of writing for various media platforms and audiences. The focus of the subject will be to teach you how to write a range of media texts and to develop skills in editing and honing your work. The key learning outcomes of writing concisely, effective revision, distilling information and sound knowledge of grammar and style are transferable across a range of vocations. You will develop a folio of written work. This is a level 1 subject.  This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation in either online or face-to-face tutorials weekly. These classes may fall in business hours.

In this subject, you are introduced to key forms of creative nonfiction, and the techniques and tools required to write these well. We conduct interlinked experiments in writing and, importantly, reading across a wide range of forms. You will read and interrogate many genres, including memoir, travel, reportage and history. You are encouraged to engage critically with ideas about nonfiction, including: the idea of the narrator and narrative voice; authenticity, objectivity and truth; the relationship between self and others, places, nature and identity; form and genre; humanness and memory; pasts and presents. This is a level 2 subject. This subject introduces you to writing short screen and radio plays. It takes a playful and experimental approach to exploring narrative forms for screen and radio such as place, image, and character. This subject will suit those who are new to script writing, as well as those who have had some script writing experience. Your creative work will be informed by critical readings and case studies of short film and radio scripts and productions, and your writing will be developed in a supportive, collaborative environment. These activities will help strengthen your ability to craft stories across all genres, and to critically reflect on your work.We will also consider the opportunities to produce and distribute short films and radio plays, which have increased dramatically in the last few years.This is a Level 2 subject: please consider the subject prerequisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions, either online or face-to-face, with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

In this subject, you will acquire the skills and knowledge to begin the development and writing of a full length theatre performance text, series pilot or feature film script, by presenting a pitch, a critical treatment of concept, a folio of selected scenes, and workshopped readings.This subject explores script writing as a range of practices that are culturally and historically shaped. It combines critical readings of theoretical texts, plays and screenplays with the workshopping of your writing in a supportive, collaborative environment. We will also survey local and national script development and script production opportunities for emerging writers.This is a level 3 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Social media platforms are an integral part of news and media. In Using Social Media, you will learn how to use different social media platforms to both create and share media content. The subject explores how to use social media to research and report original stories, including how to identify and verify sources, and how to tell stories in live formats. You will also learn how to analysis social media strategy and develop a strategy for social media content dissemination, including how to determine an audience, and create engaging content specifically for social media, such as text, graphics and images. As well as key skills, this subject delivers key knowledge on misinformation and disinformation in social media, and legal and ethical implications, including defamation, privacy and copyright.This is a level 2 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

This subject teaches the techniques of audio news writing and explores podcasting and the use of sound in storytelling. Through the production of news bulletins and individual podcasts you will develop interviewing, recording, voice presentation and editing skills. The subject also covers how to create, develop and tell stories in the context of a podcast, including how to write to audio, and how to develop and practice presenting skills to enable the production of compelling podcasts. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation in either weekly online or face-to-face tutorials. These classes may fall in business hours.

Podcasting

Learning to write well brings benefits within and beyond university. This interdisciplinary unit offers you the opportunity to strengthen your professional, creative and academic writing skills. You will develop a conceptual framework for analysing the writing of others and editing your own work effectively, as well as improving your skills in the generation of ideas, elements of style and identification with the audience. These areas of writing will be explored through modules with theoretical and practical components: -- Academic writing, including essay writing, essay structure, avoiding plagiarism, editing and proof-reading. -- Non-fiction writing across a number of genres, particularly writing for popular media, reviews of the arts and writing for the web. -- Creative writing, which can include fiction, poetry and scriptwriting. This is a level 1 subject.  This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation. These classes may fall in business hours.

This subject explores how editing and publishing practices are evolving in the twenty-first century. Students are introduced to key editorial skills – from proofreading, copyediting and structural editing to negotiating the author-editor relationship – and to vital ethical, legal and economic considerations in contemporary publishing. Placing both the local and global industries in their wider historical and cultural contexts, we&#39;ll consider how publishing has always been at the cutting edge of technological and social change, and how external factors continue to shape editing and publishing today.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

In recent years, fictions and popular biographies about people from the past have featured prominently on bestseller lists and in literary awards. Why do writers and readers turn to these representations with such enthusiasm? In this subject we analyse the social and cultural significance of narrative encounters with people from the past. We consider how readers, creators and critics engage with them, and with their historical contexts. We ask: What are the ethical dilemmas of such creative and critical practices? How do understandings of gender, sexuality, race, dis/ability and class intersect in these works? How might they challenge our view of the current moment and its various prejudices? How do they offer new ways to imagine past, present and future identities?  Students will engage with these questions through textual analysis, research and the development of creative work.This is a level 3 subject delivered as an online intensive. Please consider the pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes daytime live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

In this subject, you will undertake a close and scholarly analysis of fiction and creative non fiction. Reading across a range of genres in 20th and 21st century work, you will engage with texts to identify the stylistic and technical choices writers have made and to consider the effects of these both in the prescribed texts and how they can apply these in their own writing.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
