This Special Topics subject is designed to address contemporary issues in the fields of Applied Linguistics, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Special Topics in Applied Linguistics

This subject investigates the links between language and culture, and the importance of considering and analysing the linguistic and cultural differences of learners within any learning and teaching context. In particular, you will explore three main themes. Firstly, you will look at the interdependence of language and culture. Secondly, you will investigate how linguistic and cultural differences can affect how people learn. Thirdly, you will look at the challenges and opportunities presented by intercultural communication in today&#39;s globalised world. You will be required to analyse a school-based scenario and provide recommendations on how best to facilitate intercultural communication.

Languages and Culture

In this subject you will develop and apply in-depth sociocultural knowledge relevant to the language strand you are studying (Chinese, Indonesian, or Japanese).Using a wide range of real-world, culturally relevant material and academic literature, this unit enables you to build critical-thinking skills and communicative competence to navigate contemporary cross-cultural contexts.For second language learners, the contextual knowledge intersects with the development of advanced linguistic skills to enhance your proficiency.To ensure the topic you enrol in is appropriate for your Program of Study, you must apply for permission to enrol at least three weeks prior to the commencement of the relevant trimester.2026 topics<ul><li>Trimester 1<ul><li>Japanese:</li></ul></li></ul>Japanese for Everyday Life. Please note: completion of JAPN202 or equivalent will be required for unit coordinator permission for enrolment in this topic.This subject introduces advanced authentic Japanese written and spoken texts or genres commonly used by native speakers in their daily lives. Students will analyse text structures through genre analysis, enabling them to understand rhetorical moves and accurately reproduce similar texts. These activities will enhance students&#39; sociolinguistic and sociocultural awareness, communication abilities, and independent research skills in discourse analysis. The subject aims to help students feel more confident when travelling or living in Japan. <ul><li>There are no Chinese or Indonesian topics available in LANG306 in Trimester 1.</li><li>Trimester 2<ul><li>Indonesian:<ul><li>Islam, Society and the State in Contemporary Indonesia</li></ul></li></ul></li></ul>This subject examines the complex interplay between Islam, society, culture, and politics from the pre-colonial to the post-colonial era. It critically analyses the key concepts and issues surrounding Indonesian Islam, exploring its diverse manifestations from class structures to various ideological movements. This subject also investigates the distinctive characteristics of Indonesian Islam, its interactions with the state, domestic influences, and transnational forces, as well as its evolving role in contemporary political dynamics both within Indonesia and on the global stage. <ul><li>Japanese:</li><li>Japanese Popular Culture</li></ul>This subject explores contemporary Japanese popular culture through the topic areas of anime, manga, popular music, television and the spread of Japanese popular culture abroad.  On successful completion of this subject, you will have some understanding of the role popular culture plays in everyday life in Japan and ways in which ideas and values are communicated through it. This subject will assist you in learning the Japanese language to develop an understanding of Japanese culture.  However, no proficiency in the Japanese language is required and non-language students will be able to gain a foundational knowledge of Japanese popular culture.  You will study excerpts of various authentic examples as well as the academic literature in the field.<ul><li>There is no Chinese topic available in LANG306 in Trimester 2.</li></ul>

Culture, Society, and Language in Asia

In this subject, you will reflect on how society and culture shapes language use and communication between individuals and between groups. Drawing on a range of ideas from the fields of intercultural communication, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, students develop tools, knowledge and awareness to assist them in understanding and positively engaging with the linguistic and cultural diversity around them.

Japanese Society and Culture

Contemporary French culture is rich and diverse, and exposure to its literature, film, media and music will not only broaden your cultural knowledge but also improve your comprehension and expression skills in French. In this subject you will study a range of written, aural and visual contemporary French works and will gain an understanding of some of the social, cultural and economic factors which shape metropolitan France today. The studied works have been selected to increase your exposure to the French language at an accessible level, and the weekly tasks, lectures and tutorials have been carefully designed to help you hone your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This subject will enhance your understanding of French culture.

French Through Contemporary Culture

This subject provides insights into both the traditional and contemporary Chinese society and culture. It explores the causal factors that help shape China based on cultural artifacts and reflections. The philosophical and cultural underpinnings of various historical, social and cultural phenomena are examined. Chinese Society and Culture

This subject was previously known as MHIX365 From the Beats to Big Brother: Popular Culture Since the 1950s.What can we learn about the past when we examine it through the lens of popular culture? This subject traces a history of popular culture in the United States of America and Australia from the 1950s to the present, exploring the ways that popular culture can magnify and reflect changing ideas about race, class, gender, and ideology. We will examine the impact of new technologies, moral panics over popular culture, and whether popular culture constituted a form of cultural citizenship. Film, television, music and other media are used in this unit to evoke seminal moments in the history of popular culture and students are encouraged to explore these non-discursive forms as primary sources. Students are also encouraged to consider the reception of popular culture by audiences and to think about their own experience of popular culture historically. This subject will be of particular interest to students in media, education, and cultural studies, as well as history.

Be there for the emergence of sixties counterculture. Immerse yourself in the eighties and hip hop. Tune into the rise of reality television. Look for the influence of gender, race and politics on pop culture across the past seven decades.
