Graduate Certificate in Digital Health

The health information workforce is a rapidly developing one. The Master of Health Information Management (MHIM) is an advanced program designed to provide you as current and future health information management professionals with rigorous training focused on issues of contemporary professional health information management practice.Recent industry reports and consultations have highlighted the health information workforce shortages. There is a need for appropriately qualified individuals; professionals who have the skills and knowledge to fill decision-making roles to meet the increasingly complex nature of delivering and managing health services in a data-driven environment. This has become increasingly critical given the national move to Activity Based Funding, where hospitals must track their activity at all levels against agreed targets to optimise their funding. Added to that is the push for efficiencies in the system using digital health and, assistive and emerging technologies (electronic medical records, personalised electronic health records, digitalisation) which will only serve to intensify the need for this professional sector of the health workforce in the future.

Thanks to e-medical records and capabilities, hospitals are using tech to track activity and gain funding. With this comes the need for specialised health information professionals. Specialise in analytics, governance or leadership. 

Master of Health Information Management

This subject explores the need for knowledge to be managed in an organisation, and the tools and strategies that can be used to effectively manage the knowledge assets of that organisation. The subject starts with the identification of knowledge assets in an organisation, followed by knowledge capture and codification in order for knowledge to be shared and integrated into the organisational level. The subject then explores topics on individual and organisational learning and how learning can be encouraged and facilitated. Obstacles to knowledge transfer are identified together with an examination of the role of organisational culture in facilitating knowledge sharing. The subject also explains the formation of knowledge management (KM) strategies and the need to have a KM team. Measurement of KM effectiveness and legal and ethical issues of KM are dealt with in the last two modules. The focus of the subject is on the maritime and logistics industry and the challenges and obstacles associated with knowledge management in such a globalised industry.

Knowledge Management

In this subject you will examine the development, implementation, and maintenance of health care systems and explore systems theory as it applies to health information systems. You will analyse the life cycle of a health information system, including strategic and tactical information, planning and project management, and the impact on the organisation of each phase of the life cycle. You will evaluate both technical (infrastructure, hardware &amp; software, Standards &amp; Codes) and people issues (education &amp; skill development, changes to roles) which need to be resolved in the process of implementing a successful health information system. You will also explore the role and impact of the informatics professional and the informatics/IT department within the health organisation.

Health Information Systems

This subject explores the evolution of the electronic health record (EHR). It examines the definition and context of the EHR, records management, the benefits and barriers of EHRs, the national health information agenda, the EHR as a socio-technical tool, ethical considerations, and the future of EHRs.

Electronic Health Records

With the explosion of technology and data in health, the field of health informatics is growing. This subject will evaluate the field of health informatics as a discipline within the health system, and appraise key principles and theories. The foundational elements of data, information, knowledge and wisdom are assessed within the healthcare context. Applicable standards and governance are introduced. This subject provides the foundation for ongoing exploration of health informatics.
