The Bachelor of Law (3 years) encourages both a critical and progressive approach to the existing law and legal system; ensuring that students understand both the law and the context.The Bachelor of Laws is accredited by the Legal Profession Admission Board of NSW for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW and mutual recognition legislation extends admission to other Australian jurisdictions.After completion of academic qualifications there are a range of employment options from which to choose. Graduates who wish to be admitted to practice as a solicitor, barrister or legal practitioner anywhere in Australia will also have to undertake a course of practical legal training (PLT). This can consist of approximately half a year&#39;s full-time training, undertaken internally or externally, or of equivalent part-time training. In some jurisdictions, it may be possible to do articles of clerkship instead. Because the system adopted varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, enquiries should be made to the admission authority in the state or territory in which you intend to practice; this is usually a committee of the Supreme Court of that State or Territory or a special body set up to administer admissions to the legal profession. Bachelor of Laws (3 Years)

The Bachelor of Legal Studies is a broad and comprehensive course which will provide graduates with a wide legal knowledge and skills in legal reasoning. In particular, this course provides students with the opportunity to design their own program of study after completing the core units. Students may study units of interest from a particular category which will enhance career opportunities in an ever-changing legal services market. The course will also provide career opportunities for those with an interest in a career in policy development and the justice sector.Please note: students will only be admitted to the full Bachelor of Legal Studies upon successful completion of the four Open Access subjects [LSU100, LAW100, LAW101, LAW102] with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.0.Bachelor of Legal Studies aims to graduate students who can demonstrate:<ol><li>a knowledge of the fundamentals of the Australian legal system;</li><li>knowledge of areas that could include judicial administration, criminology, criminal law, business studies, management, communications, environmental and rural studies;</li><li>the knowledge and skills to work in many different roles in research, operations, policy or advocacy in the justice sector;</li><li>autonomy, well-developed judgment and ethical responsibility; and</li><li>cognitive, technical and communication skills to undertake professional roles in research, operations, policy or advocacy in the justice sector.</li></ol>

Contract Law

A subject suitable for both law and non-law students, this subject introduces students to Indigenous people’s experience with the legal system in Australia and selected other jurisdictions (United States, Canada and New Zealand), and the interactions between non-Indigenous and Indigenous legal systems. With regard to both the historical and contemporary setting, the subject examines these themes in a variety of contexts including land rights and native title, Indigenous peoples and environmental management, the criminal justice system, and Indigenous ownership of intellectual and cultural property. The subject matter is rapidly changing, and new issues such as the negotiation of a treaty in Australia between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, and constitutional law reform to give Indigenous peoples a voice in the Commonwealth parliament, are considered. The subject also considers options for law and policy reform in a variety of contexts including the criminal justice system and women’s rights.

The subject also examines Australian Indigenous Peoples&#39; dispute resolution processes. There are opportunities to critically analyse disputes and evaluate alternatives to litigation. You may build your capabilities in the art of effective listening and negotiating. These are fundamental bases of ADR. These skills are in high demand across many industries.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

This subject introduces you to the key elements of domestic Australian and Indigenous legal systems, and considers how they compare with other legal systems around the world. You will gain an introduction into how law is made in Australia by courts and the legislature, within Australia’s constitutional framework, and consider how Tasmania’s legislature and the courts have addressed contemporary and historical social issues. You will consider how a person’s place within society influences the way they perceive and evaluate law and will be introduced to several ethical issues and rules that arise for different actors within the legal system. This will be your first opportunity to learn skills that are fundamental to your future studies and careers in law: working effectively in small groups; critical thinking; how to read and take good notes from class and texts; and how to manage study time to achieve success in law.

Public international law permeates most areas of Australian law and it is therefore essential for law graduates to have a solid grounding in the sources and methodology of international law. This subject develops students&#39; understanding of the sources of international law, state responsibility, international dispute settlement, and treaty making. It introduces students to specific fields of international law, including international humanitarian law, environmental, human rights and Indigenous issues, the Antarctic Treaty system, the use of force and the relationship between international and Australian law. The subject fosters students&#39; interest and engagement with international law by exploring links with a range of contemporary contentious political issues both nationally and internationally. A key component of the subject is to introduce and practise a range of fundamental legal research skills that are essential to investigating International Law studies and wider legal studies.
