This subject was previously known as Interior Design Studio 2 - Elements.An introduction to the tools of the Interior Designer, demonstrating how interior space is conceived using the different elements that comprise an interior. &#39;Interior elements&#39; such as colour, light, materials, sound, space and volume and furnishings are explored separately and then in combination. A series of interactive design activities will introduce students to discipline exemplars and experimental techniques that inform the student’s creation of a small-scale design proposal. This subject introduces the reality of contemporary professional practice, and allows students to consider and prepare for opportunities for future industry employment. Contemporary local, national and international transdisciplinary realities of Interior Architecture practice are the foci of this subject, which investigates and simulates real-life issues, complexities and opportunities in practice. The subject is structured as two separate components: an online practice module that explores issues relating to the professional practice of interior architecture, including practice law and contracts; and, a studio-based practice simulation, which works through a given brief from idea conception through to documentation drawings and includes industry culture, and ethics within the profession. The Practice Simulation challenge is to work effectively within a group to meet the brief while at the same time producing individual output which mirrors authentic design practice. Self-directed and “out of the box” thinking is encouraged.

Design approaches to services integration, materiality and detailing will be informed by the user experience. Design methodologies and explorations are informed by research, resulting in a well detailed, resolved spatial outcome. Cultural values and perspectives are explored and incorporated in the design proposition. Interior Design Studio - Well Being

This subject is designed to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of a career in design practice that extends to the transdisciplinary nature of interior design professional practice. Students investigate the role of the interior designer within the complexities of a project and what it means to collaborate professionally with consultants, suppliers and clients. A range of guest speakers will share expertise and practice experiences from a number of perspectives including practice management, law, contracts and specifications presenting various insights into the workplace culture. Interior Architecture Practice

This subject was previously known as Interior Design Studio 10 - Future.This theory informed design studio subject aims to synthesise and stretch the students&#39; understanding and application of design methodologies towards speculating on and imagining new visions for the future. It focuses on extreme, complex and bizarre environments, such as space travel or the underground bunker. Philosophical and theoretical readings are explored as other ways of thinking and seeing the world. Similarly, possibilities for geographic, built and spatial typologies and material realities are investigated. Design prototyping and testing are to be done through digital fabrication and simulated environments. Interior Design Studio - Future

This subject was previously known as Interior Design Studio 1 - City.An introduction to the world of designing – the act and the outcomes with an emphasis on the domain of the ‘interior’ and its creation through design. The subject introduces the discipline of Interior Architecture and the role of the Interior Architect as a practitioner with particular attitudes and beliefs. Community settings within the city are explored as the context of the interior: the city as cultural artefact, its conditions, its histories and spaces. Students will study the relationship between idea, space, form and structure as it is related to human culture that also recognises indigenous culture; analysis of the city as a representation of collective values; analysis, interpretation and creation of the elements of the city including interiors, pavilions, gardens, squares, streets, stairs, doors, gates and windows. This innovative subject examines narratives of occupation, of use, and of making, as embedded in designed products that constitute the interior. Through a series of explorations and testings, students use technology to create a prototype object that has purpose and feasibility for the design industry. Emphasis is placed upon future-thinking and finding simple ways to communicate narratives of construction, use, and occupation. Practices of environmental sustainability are also considered in students’ final products.

Under the direction of experienced Interior Design practitioners students are offered a professional environment which incorporates a breadth of practice and academic experiences relevant to the discipline of interior architecture. Each student will initiate and develop an individual Interior Architecture design project aimed at developing their design expertise. Students are required to identify, explore and extend their chosen project, testing spatial ideas and concepts in relation to human occupation beyond pre-existing and embedded assumptions and inclusive of cultural and international perspectives. Students are encouraged to demonstrate innovative, reflective design practice, drawing from their existing body of work to demonstrate an emerging identity as a designer, while demonstrating command over relevant practice conventions and communication techniques and strategies.
