This subject focuses on learning research methods to solve real problems. You will come to understand how to design research, define an argument in response to the problems, use scholarly databases, consider ethical issues in data collection, generate field data, analyse and present these data, interpret results, and reflect on all these processes and their application to, for example, policy and professional contexts. The subject is a professional pathway in Masters programs in geography, planning, and spatial sciences.

Professional Research Methods

The subject explores environmental governance in the context of areas of global concern and shared international management – focusing on the polar regions, the oceans and the global climate. The concepts of sustainable development and the global commons are crucial ideas governance in these areas. This subject discusses the historical development and contested nature of governance in specific controversies including the management of ocean fisheries, protection of marine biodiversity, whaling, conservation of Antarctica, and addressing the threat of climate change. Major issues and concepts covered in the subject include: &quot;good governance&quot; and international development; the theory of the tragedy of the commons and other hypotheses of collective action problems; shared governance of contested spaces and transboundary resources; and the geo-political context of global environmental governance. These issues are explored through case studies from around the world, and will include some consideration of Australia&#39;s role in the selected examples.

Global Environmental Governance

In this subject you will develop the knowledge and skills needed to undertake planning for protected area systems. We will explore the frameworks, processes and methods used to identify areas for inclusion in national reserve systems. Students will have the opportunity to apply and compare reserve selection methods using Tasmania as a case study. Topics covered include system purposes and priorities; national reserve planning frameworks; systematic conservation planning; government reserve selection processes; and collaborative and participatory approaches. Students without prior experience in GIS and spatial analysis will be given a basic introduction to these skills. Note, the software taught in this course works best with a Microsoft operating system. There is an optional on campus weekend tutorial session for students to complete the technical training on university computers. For those wanting more instruction for the technical aspects this session, or who use a Mac as their personal computer for learning, the on campus weekend session is recommended.

Reserve System Planning

Conservation efforts globally are focussed primarily on biodiversity, but geodiversity elements and features such as soils, rivers, mountains and caves provide humans with a wealth of ecosystem services and enjoyment. In this subject, you will learn about how to recognise geodiversity elements as critical system supports for biodiversity and ecosystem function, and to appreciate their cultural and recreational value for society. Using a series of masterclasses with global experts (in-field, in person or online), you will be immersed in the practices of &#39;geoconservation&#39; and &#39;geotourism&#39;. With no prior knowledge or skills required, you will develop skills as a communicator and conservation professional, and learn how to:- Rank and assess geodiversity elements (as &#39;subjects&#39; of conservation) and features in terms of their rarity, uniqueness, importance to science and society,- Construct inventories of abiotic, biotic and cultural elements and values for recreation and reserve establishment- Undertake in-field degradation assessments of landscapes used by humans for tourism and production- Recommend management strategies to restore landscape features and values for human enjoyment and wilderness protection- Undertake decision-making in a range of modes – graphical, consensus methods, GIS methods and qualitative methods.- Communicate landscape features and conservation strategies to a broad range of audiences.Any student interested in how to undertake conservation practice, curate heritage, assess landscape suitability for tourism and other ventures, or to communicate natural values will find KGA527 useful. All skills and knowledge required to successfully complete KGA527 are developed within the subject.

Landscape Conservation and Recreation

This subject provides students with a practical understanding of key systems for protected area planning and management. Terrestrial, freshwater and marine protected areas are considered. The global context of protected areas is analysed, including issues of definition, scope and governance. As governance processes provide the institutional structures within which planning and management occurs, particular attention is given to public, private, community and collaborative arrangements. Systems and associated methods for addressing complexity, sustainable finance, management effectiveness, community engagement and landscape/seascape scale management are then considered. These topics are explored by drawing on the experiences of practitioners, case study examples and fieldwork.

Protected Area Planning and Management Systems

International Maritime Policy will bring you into contact with different issues, including legal, regulatory and policy issues, in contemporary integrated oceans management. The underlying theme is one of integrated policy, planning and management covering all uses of the sea. The modern maritime manager should have an appreciation of the many uses (and demands) of marine areas, the potential conflicts between these uses, and the contemporary drive to manage marine areas in an integrated and holistic manner, with a focus on sustainable development..

International Maritime Policy

Research Methods is designed to serve both theoretical and practical purposes. The subject begins by introducing the principles of project management followed by the philosophy, logic and nature of research and then each of the major research activities. Research Methods is an introduction to widely used methods of inquiry in the areas of social science, management and engineering that relate particularly to both organisational research and scientific enquiry. This subject will build confidence in developing and refining research ideas that are presented through the development of a research proposal. In summary, undertaking this subject provides an opportunity to learn how to ask the right questions, adopt a scientific approach in ethically collecting data, and how to analyse and interpret data that is effectively communicated to assist in solving problems.The major outcome of the subject is a completed research project proposal suitable for students progressing to the Dissertation or Industry Research Project subjects. For students not undertaking either of these subjects, Research Methods provides useful knowledge and skills in how to solve complex problems by providing a systematic approach and tools for conducting research.

Research Methods

Tasmania and Australia are rich in history and heritage. What gets presented and celebrated however is contested and challenged. This subject does not only introduce a critical reading of heritage, it offers tools and frameworks for participants to reflect and be cognisant of the challenges of presenting the past, and address difficult challenges in offering heritage to the community and to tourists. Being sensitive and balanced is necessary but what that means is contested. By addressing difficult issues, this subject provides guidance on how to create, formulate and mediate exciting and meaningful heritage experiences. Field trip dates: 8-11 April 2024

Critical and Contested Issues in Cultural Heritage

Students are enabled to constructively consider the interface of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous issues, histories, cultures and perspectives in education, the curriculum and the ‘hidden curriculum’. The subject has four foci which are integrated: identity/ nationalism, history, ethics and pedagogy. It considers these foci as they relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and non-Indigenous students, cultural engagement and racism in education and in Australian society. The subject enables students to develop an ethical position and critical reflection to recognise that cultural engagement in any classroom is contingent on the teacher’s awareness of his/her own cultural positioning; and the process and pedagogy enables students to identify and challenge institutional political, racial and social injustices in education. The subject enables students to own a position from which to be confident and capable to teach the interface of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous histories and perspectives since colonisation and to teach Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous students with cultural insight and respect. The subject fosters deep thinking and engagement with ethical issues that are vital to being an effective and transformative teacher capable of fostering restorative justice and reconciliation.

Cultural Awareness: The Non-indigenous and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Interface

This subject investigates the links between language and culture, and the importance of considering and analysing the linguistic and cultural differences of learners within any learning and teaching context. In particular, you will explore three main themes. Firstly, you will look at the interdependence of language and culture. Secondly, you will investigate how linguistic and cultural differences can affect how people learn. Thirdly, you will look at the challenges and opportunities presented by intercultural communication in today&#39;s globalised world. You will be required to analyse a school-based scenario and provide recommendations on how best to facilitate intercultural communication.
