This subject aims to develop an awareness of environmental and human health impacts of housing in order to inform critical and creative decision-making in the design and renovation of houses. You will explore how housing affects our own health and the health of the planet, and how sustainable design can reduce environmental impacts and improve wellbeing. You will also learn how to make design choices that are more sustainable in relation to your personal needs and circumstances. The subject will emphasise reflective thinking, practical knowledge and an integrated approach that relates issues of sustainability to quality design, functionality and value.

Design and renovate healthy and sustainable homes. You’ll unpack what sustainability means for dwellings. Look into designing for health and climate. Exercise your creativity. Get to know sustainable products and building materials.

Introduction to Family History is designed for people interested in their own family histories or genealogy in general. You will learn how to efficiently plan and accurately record your family history using family history research principles and practices. The subject will teach you how to critically evaluate a range of online family history resources for accuracy and reliability. You will also learn how to communicate your findings in clear writing that is accurately referenced. Online discussion forums will enable you to communicate with fellow students as you embark upon your research journey.

Introduction to Family History

KSA101 will provide a background to the science and management of the seas with focus on Antarctic and Southern Ocean. On the completion of this subject, students will demonstrate a knowledge and comprehension of the contemporary issues facing Antarctic, marine and coastal environments, and the management strategies used to optimise the value (market and non-market) of these areas.

Explore Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. You’ll learn how governments manage the southernmost coasts and seas of the world. Cover contemporary issues as well as some historical, legal, and political topics.

Introduction to Marine and Antarctic Science A

This is an introductory subject for students with little or no prior knowledge of Japanese. This subject has an emphasis on the interactive use of the Japanese language. It develops competence in basic spoken and written Japanese. The subject also provides a competence base in grammatical knowledge and oral/aural skills from which students can proceed to HMJ102. While a key goal of this subject is the acquisition of communication skills in Japanese, the subject also provides the basic knowledge of cross-cultural communication by exploring the linguistic and cultural differences between English and Japanese.

Introduction to Japanese 1A

This subject provides underpinning skills, theories, techniques, and strategies to prepare you for university-level study and to understand yourself as a learner. You will be introduced to concepts of self-management and relevant practical skills that can be applied effectively in other subjects. You will explore concepts such as strengths-based learning, engagement and flow, motivation, work/life balance, resilience strategies, critical thinking, and work styles. In addition, you will learn and utilise practical skills such as reflective writing, preparing oral presentations, time management, transferable skills, goal setting, critical reading, career investigation, mind mapping and effective study techniques. The overarching aim of this subject is to provide you with the recognition of your strengths and skills, strategies to develop confidence as a student and to be successful in your future university studies.

Spanning over four centuries, from the Italian Renaissance in the late Middle Ages to the French Revolution in 1789, this subject explores the history of Early Modern Europe, a crucial period in shaping both Europe and the world we live in today. It investigates cultural, intellectual and religious change; the rise of the modern state; war and empire; the emergence of human rights; and modern political culture. Case studies include the Renaissance, the Spanish Empire, the Reformation, Witchcraft, the Enlightenment, and the Age of Revolution.

European History: Renaissance to Revolutions

Sustainability is a central concept for communities pursuing social and economic goals within ecological limits. Yet the different ways sustainability is defined, communicated and enacted reflects the wide range of underlying values, perspectives and priorities at stake. In this subject, students will explore the rich history and literature of sustainability, including the formation of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. By exploring the concept across economic, social and ecological thinking, students will develop an ability to think critically about sustainability in their own lives, and communicate sustainability challenges and solutions to diverse audiences.Employing practical skills in stakeholder engagement, narrative and visual communication, students will develop their research and communication skills to implement a sustainability solution in their local communities.

Communicating Sustainability

Australia is a migrant nation, with a rich and diverse mix of peoples, languages and cultures. In Migrant Families, we trace the journeys of ancestors who migrated to and from Australia and New Zealand, and place their lives in the context of global migration over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We explore the ways governments have shaped populations through migration and citizenship law and policy, and consider how these might have affected your ancestors’ lives. Migrant Families develops your archival research skills in the digital age. We explore where and how to find migration records (in Australia, New Zealand and overseas) and how to use them effectively to tell your family’s migration story. The subject builds on historical research and writing skills developed in the Foundation-level Family History subjects.

Migrant Families

Convict, prison and court records can provide rich, if sometimes disturbing, evidence of the lives led by our ancestors. This subject draws upon the expertise of leading historians of crime, the law, and convict transportation to guide you through the vast archival underbelly of the criminal justice system. You will learn about convicts’ journeys from the time of their trials and transportation, through to living under sentence in the Australian penal colonies, and what likely became of them afterwards. You will be shown how to find and use a wide range of digital records and other relevant research materials to contextualise individual convict’s life stories. This is a subject for those who want to get ‘forensic’ about the past.

Convict Ancestors

In this subject, you will be introduced to the concept of sustainability starting with the transformations necessary for achieving the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a way that organises them into 6 logical groups. You will examine each grouping and how collectively they form a framework for accelerating progress, in line with the latest global efforts to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, and a just, and sustainable world by 2050 within safe planetary limits. This deeply interdisciplinary subject explores transformation across education, health, energy, sustainable food production, land, water and oceans, sustainable cities and communities. Along with the transformations you will identify the environmental, social, and economic implications of traditional production, processing and manufacturing systems at local and global scales and learn why we need to rethink and redesign the way we make and consume things. You will learn how decoupling, digital transformation and circular design must underpin all of these transformations. As immediate and ambitious action is necessary to achieve a sustainable future, you will explore, ‘how are we going to get there?’ as well as your own role in contributing to change. This subject also introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.
