This subject reviews what archaeology has discovered about the world&#39;s great civilisations. We investigate how civilisations developed and the implications of this knowledge for our own survival. We embark on a survey of the variety of complex human societies that have arisen in the last 6,000 years: in Egypt and the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Western Europe, China, South and Southeast Asia, Mesoamerica and South America.

Unearth ancient history. You’ll explore the powerful civilisations of ancient Egypt, China, South America, and others. Trace the rise and fall of ancient cultures, thinking about how their stories relate to today’s society.

Every week students will be introduced to a number of myths from ancient Greece, Rome, the ancient Near East (including Egypt), and some myths from the Aboriginal traditions. You will study the earliest creation myths, explore the stories of gods and goddesses, heroes and monsters, in ancient literature and art. The myths, studied in translation, will be analysed in terms of their cultural context, the genre in which they belong, their typology and as the semester progresses through certain theoretical perspectives.

Reveal how the politics and cultural life of ancient civilisations are reflected in their mythology. Meet figures from Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern mythology. Study Egyptian and biblical texts. Look for examples of myths in literature and art.

‘The Human Journey; archaeology and evolution&#39; looks at the origins and evolutionary paths of humans, from our earliest potential ancestors 7 million years ago, to the first occurrence of own species around 300,000 years ago. To do this we examine the fossil, archaeological and behavioural records of our ancestors as well as looking at the climatic and environmental backdrop to our evolution. The subject is built around case studies of pivotal archaeological and fossil sites, including the active research of the teaching staff - who have discovered key early human fossils in Africa. Taking a global outlook, from our earliest origins in Africa, the dispersal of the first human species out of Africa and into Asia and Europe, to the origin and relationship of our own species to our close cousins the Neanderthals and Denisovans. Taught by La Trobe researchers working at key paleoanthropological and archaeological sites such as Drimolen and Amanzi Springs in South Africa, the subject presents upon their active fieldwork and research within a historical context to understand our evolution, and to explore how views of our human ancestry have changed through time - highlighting the shared ancestry of all humans alive today and the epic journey that our ancestors took to becoming us.

This subject introduces you to the world of ancient Rome through the study of ancient literary texts in translation. We learn how to analyse and interpret the perspectives of ancient writers who wrote across different literary genres and time periods in the Roman world. Mytho-historical narratives about the foundation of Rome provide a starting point for our exploration of how the Romans constructed their cultural identity through literature. Political speeches and personal poetry give us a window into the society and politics of the late Republic. Imperial biographies and plays illustrate how texts were used to critique power and authority in the Roman empire. This subject provides you with the foundational knowledge and skills required for further studies in Classics.

Introduction to Family History is designed for people interested in their own family histories or genealogy in general. You will learn how to efficiently plan and accurately record your family history using family history research principles and practices. The subject will teach you how to critically evaluate a range of online family history resources for accuracy and reliability. You will also learn how to communicate your findings in clear writing that is accurately referenced. Online discussion forums will enable you to communicate with fellow students as you embark upon your research journey.

Introduction to Family History

This subject provides students with a broad and eclectic view of the history and philosophy of psychology. It surveys a selection of interesting and influential events, people, and ideas and uses these as a focus to critically examine issues that directly and indirectly shape the discipline as it is practiced today.

Break down some of the big theories of psychology and analyse them. Afford yourself a fuller picture of the history of psychological study, and the real-life figures who pioneered it. Ponder the nature of the mind and the philosophy of science.

History and Philosophy of Psychology

Introduces students to foundational skills and concepts in the study of modern history from the late eighteenth century. Students will traverse the world from 1789 to 2001 looking closely at the role of revolution and the emergence of the nation-state, as well as the cost to humans and the natural world of economic growth and colonisation. Beginning with the French Revolution, the unit investigates conflict and change in the quest for equality and citizenship, telling the story of democratic aspirations in the modern world, including competing visions of modernity. It considers those excluded along with the new forms of solidarity and enmity created against the backdrop of rapid industrialisation, capitalism and environmental change. Students will build a foundational chronology of the modern world and develop skills such as critical and analytical thinking, effective communication and empathy.

Revolutions, Nationalism and Exploitation in the Modern World, 1789-2001

Who are the most interesting characters on your family tree? Would you like to write their stories to share with other family members, or with a wider audience? Perhaps you have an ancestor who is intriguing because of what you don&#39;t know about them and so can only imagine their story. This subject is an introduction to writing non-fictional and fictional narratives based on genealogical records. Students will gain skills in crafting engaging, readable family history narratives through writing historical and/or fictional pieces about people, places, and events from their family records.

Writing Family History

Recent surveys of popular historical awareness have demonstrated that most people find out about the past from film and television, yet visual histories are often criticised for the ways they present the past. This subject will consider the limitations and possibilities of history on screen. Do filmic histories represent a more &#39;authentic&#39; engagement with the past, or do they peddle false versions of history to a gullible public? How might we read historical films and television programs carefully and critically to understand diverse historical interpretations? This subject will develop student&#39;s understandings of the critical study of history on film, examining the ways that all historical texts (including films) make arguments about the past. The unit will examine cinematic and televisual representations of Australian, American and British histories.

Screening the Past: History on Film and Television

Historical fiction is one of the oldest genres of the literary novel, but the past is also used in many different ways in popular mass-market fiction such as romance and fantasy. This unit explores the use of history in narrative forms, including medieval literature, the rise of the novel in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and the explosion of popular genre fiction in the twentieth century. It looks at how the genre became &quot;feminised&quot; and the role of the novelist Georgette Heyer in creating a new subgenre of historical romance. It explores how the past, from the ancient world to Australian history, has been fictionalised. Yet the twenty-first century historical novel is not merely entertaining; it can create debates and challenge public perceptions of the past in unsettling ways. Students will also consider how Australian authors have used historical fiction to retell or offer alternative narratives about the nation. By the end of this unit, students will understand how the past informs literary and popular fiction, and why historical fiction can sometimes be considered a form of historiographical interpretation, especially in novels relating to the Second World War and the Holocaust.
