This Higher Education Certificate may lead students into a general Health Sciences program. The Undergraduate Certificate in Health Sciences is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in health or allied health professions . Delve into the connections between people’s minds and bodies to better understand wellbeing. You’ll explore both the positive and risky behaviours that can influence people’s health. Touch on the connection between stress and illness. 

This subject serves as an introduction to the human body and key organ systems. It begins with anatomical terminology and the relationships between body cells, tissues and organs. Key cell processes such as respiration, protein synthesis, and cell division will be covered. Students will then explore the basic function and control of the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and excretory systems, and how these systems contribute to the changing needs of the human body. The subject includes exploration of the lymphatic and immune systems and how they provide defence against microorganisms. This subject was previously known as Imagining Health in Social and Cultural Contexts.An introduction to sociological and anthropological perspectives on health, wellbeing illness and disability in society; understanding the contribution of the biomedical and social models of health for transdisciplinary practice for nurses and allied health: professionals. Incorporating contemporary, historical, social and cultural perspectives in local and global contexts to identify social determinants of health. Understanding traditional healing and other healing practices within a diverse community to cultural safe, secure and competent care, which is necessary to build individual and community empowerment. Recognising the impact of gender, sexuality, disability, migration, being a refugee, internally displaced person or member of any marginalised population on health. An overview of the structure and function of human anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on musculo-skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, digestive, endocrine, immune, lymphatic and urinary systems. Human cell biology and homeostasis will also be investigated. Introductory of epidemiology will be discussed.Please Note: This subject cannot be used as credit towards a university degree. Explore the human body to see what it’s made of and how it works. Examine anatomy and physiology, from the macro musculoskeletal level all the way down to cell biology. Dive into scientific literature and draw on it to explain the body’s systems.

Introduction to Health Sciences

This subject was previously known as EDP383 Health and Physical Education.
This subject introduces students to health and physical education in the contemporary Australian primary school curriculum, where emphasis is on developing children’s health and physical literacies within safe and lifelong learning frameworks so they are able to flourish as healthy and active citizens. With attention to diversity and social justice, children’s rights to develop health and physical literacies within their personal, physical and socio-cultural contexts are explored, and relevant teaching approaches identified. Given the emphasis on evidence-based curriculum design, students will investigate the research that underpins the contemporary curriculum rationale and focus.
This subject reviews ongoing, developmentally appropriate and explicit teaching about health and movement, where children participate safely to develop the knowledge, skills, dispositions and understandings to make healthy and active choices for the wellbeing of themselves and others. In this regard, the importance of physical skills in the early childhood years, including observation and practise of fundamental motor skills (FMS), assessment of FMS and appropriate interventions, is addressed. Advanced movement skills and strategies, components of personal, social and community health, fitness, spatial awareness and games-based teaching models are also explored.
