Study Graduate Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) online through Open Universities Australia. Explore all degrees, subjects and short courses now.

The Graduate Certificate (TESOL) equips student teachers to Teach English to Speakers of Other Languages both in Australia and overseas.This degree assists experienced, practising teachers in their career development by providing them with an additional specialist teaching area. For teachers who wish to add TESOL to their professional repertoire, this Certificate will provide them with a qualification which will allow them to work within the field in their current employment and assist with applications for positions at specialist language centres in Australia and overseas. Student teachers choose four of the five units on offer (see Subjects in this degree). One of these can be a practicum unit (CUR-TESOL505 Language Teaching Practice) which requires student teachers to work alongside an approved mentor teacher in a school or language centre for 10 days with at least 20 hours of supervised and assessed face to face teaching practice within that time. Student teachers hoping to use their Grad Cert TESOL in schools and centres in NSW (and other states where a practicum component is compulsory) should choose the practicum unit (CUR-TESOL505 Language Teaching Practice) alongside the unit Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language Methodologies (CUR-TESOL502) in SP1. CUR-TESOL501 (Materials Design and Assessment) will not be chosen by those wishing to complete a practicum component as CUR-TESOL505 replaces this unit.  PLEASE NOTE: CSP funding has been secured for this Grad Cert TESOLThe Grad Cert TESOL is a pathway to the Curtin MA Applied Linguistics which builds on the knowledge and skills in TESOL developed in the Certificate. It focuses on developing successful classroom practices that address the learning needs and interests of culturally diverse and language minority students. Students in this subject will have the opportunity to apply what has been discussed in the workshops to hands-on teaching practices and detailed lesson planning.

Gain an overview of the approaches and methods used in teaching English to non-native speakers. Develop classroom techniques that address the needs of culturally diverse students to improve your teaching practices and detailed lesson planning.

This subject will support you to gain the theoretical understandings, skills and methodologies to provide learning and teaching experiences within the Languages domain. You will be required to develop a comprehensive and coherent base of theoretical understandings upon which to base future learning and teaching experiences, which will suit the diverse contexts in which Languages teaching may occur. You will begin to explore and apply to practice contemporary language teaching theories, methodologies, principles and practices as expressed in the ACARA Curriculum: Languages. Current issues in Language teaching will be critiqued to develop the learners professional understanding of being a Language educator. This is the first of two sequential language (Languages / TESOL) teaching methodology units for Master of Teaching students.

Languages Teaching Methodologies

This subject explores linguistics as an academic discipline, with a strong focus on its practical relevance to language learning and teaching. A central idea underpinning this subject is the vital role that language awareness plays in preparing teachers to teach English to speakers of other languages. Students will engage with core concepts and principles of linguistics and second language acquisition, and develop their understanding of key domains including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. The subject also examines contemporary approaches to teaching grammar and considers the relationship between linguistic awareness and language awareness in the classroom. Through a combination of theoretical study, collaborative discussion, and reflective activities, students will build the analytical skills and professional insight needed to interpret language structures and apply this knowledge to effective teaching practice.

Linguistics and Language Analysis

This subject introduces the various component systems of language as a basis for conceptualising and describing language variation in education. These concepts are also applied to students’ individual needs and experience as they relate to current theories of first and second language acquisition and instruction.

Reflect on your personal practice and examine contemporary approaches to materials design and evaluation in TESOL. Look at needs analysis, lesson objectives, validity, reliability, preparing learners for testing and divergent digital approaches.

This subject was previously known as Planning, Execution and Evaluation of TESOL.This subject will introduce lesson planning including selecting appropriate aims/objectives, making assumptions about assumed linguistic knowledge of the students, anticipating potential linguistic problems and solutions to those problems and materials design. It will also consider appropriate teaching, learning and assessment strategies in language teaching. A two-week minimum professional placement will support the practical application of the knowledge and skills gained in the subject along with insights into the complexity of the language teacher’s role. This subject explores the complex relationship between language and culture, and considers both in terms of linguistic and cultural diversity. The subject applies understandings of each to the teaching and learning of language. An emphasis is placed on understanding &#39;culture&#39; from a range of critical perspectives, and to explore the way in which intercultural communication is at play in English language learning and teaching. Issues of identity, the emergence of &#39;World Englishes&#39;, and the contribution of critical sociolinguistics are considered in relation to the practice of English language learning and teaching

Language, Culture and Diversity

This subject critically examines the way in which culture, context and language come together to produce different varieties of language and diverse pragmatic styles. It aims to develop transcultural competence for those working in culturally and linguistically diverse contexts.

Analyse how culture and context come together to produce different types of language and styles. Learn to see similarities and differences and appreciate the impact of styles of language on communication, identity, power and social status.

The subject offers students opportunities to consider what it means to lead learning in culturally and linguistically sustaining environments. These types of environments are commonplace in Australia and include individuals from multicultural and multilingual backgrounds. While this subject focuses on classroom contexts, it will also inform leadership practices in other environments consisting of individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. A central premise of the unit is that sustaining environments are collaborative and include pedagogies which emerge from the capabilities of individuals. In particular, the subject aims to raise critical awareness of cultural and linguistic inclusivity in multilingual/multicultural spaces, show students how to get to know learners in their contexts through ethnographic and action research, and, with those understandings, learn to develop pedagogies and strategies for teaching English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) to students in mainstream classes.
