This subject will provide an overview of local and international, historical and philosophical perspectives that have influenced contemporary Australian early childhood education and care contexts. Their impact on early childhood education and care and its leadership and management will be critically examined. The subject affords the opportunity to explore and critique policy and procedure development in the light of current legislative and accountability requirements. Philosophy, Management and Leadership in Early Childhood Education and Care

This subject was previously known as EDE282 Health and Physical Education in Early Childhood.
This subject investigates health, and wellbeing factors related to the development and care of young children (birth - 6 years). This includes examining social and emotional, linguistic, and cognitive development of children from birth to 8 years. Mandatory health, safety and child protection policies are examined together with appropriate strategies that educators in early childhood settings can effectively implement to enhance the outcomes for young children. These strategies will not only help maintain a healthy early childhood environment, but will also improve outcomes for the whole community within an early childhood educational context. The subject also explores the characteristics of children&#39;s physical development and motor coordination and how educators can provide children with quality fundamental movement experiences.

This subject will enable pre-service educators to develop a sound understanding of the importance of supporting the physical, social and emotional health and wellbeing of young children for their development and learning. The subject explores the characteristics of children&#39;s physical development and motor coordination. Early childhood professionals have an added duty of care that necessitates a comprehensive knowledge of likely and unlikely medical events in children&#39;s lives. It is also essential that these professionals are familiar with Australian regulations designed to protect children and ensure their optimal wellbeing. With technology and medical knowledge increasing at an exponential rate, it is important to develop a critical awareness of controversies and differences of opinion concerning practices. An awareness of others&#39; beliefs and levels of understanding is necessary. Debate is encouraged regarding health and medical choices and practices.

Familiarise yourself with Australian regulations designed to protect children and ensure their optimal wellbeing. Study human syndromes and atypical development, then learn how to promote positive health practices for children and families.

Health and Well-being in Early Childhood

This subject was previously known as EDC151 Child Development for Educators.Situated in the context of theory and research, this subject provides an overview of typical and atypical human development from conception to adulthood across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. Biological and environmental influences on development are examined. Implications for contemporary educators are explored with a focus on maximizing developmental outcomes from birth through young adulthood. In addition to emphasis on knowing your students and how they learn, this subject focuses on effective engagement and interaction with parents/carers and maintaining safe school and care environments for children and adolescents. This subject was previously known as ECHX602 Early Childhood Development.
This subject examines major theories and current issues in child development and the application of developmental theory to educational practice. It provides students with an understanding of how theory and cultural assumptions influence practice and how to recognise the implications of theory and research for teaching. The initial part of the subject is concerned with theories of development and the middle to latter sections deal with domains of development and areas of specific interest in child development for the early childhood years.

Examine major theories of child development and apply them to educational practice. Increase your awareness of the historical and contextual influences on children, and investigate the links between different dimensions of child growth and development.

Early Childhood Development

This subject explores contemporary issues of culture, equity, values, and social justice in early childhood pedagogy. Historical and contemporary images of childhood, and their relationship to images of teaching, are examined. Diverse family and community contexts are investigated, with a focus on promoting early childhood settings and services as democratic forums that are welcoming to and respectful of all cultures and beliefs. Children’s rights perspective is emphasised, and anti-bias approaches are analysed with a view towards enhancing reconciliation between diverse cultures and communities. This subject was previously known as ECHX824 Early Child Development Research and Practice.
This subject is designed to extend students&#39; knowledge of child development with a particular emphasis on approaches to understanding and measuring child development, considerations for quality in childcare, and evaluation of children&#39;s environments. Recent research studies of child development, especially in relation to prior-to-school settings, will be used as a major resource for examining contemporary theory and research in child development. Students will analyse research to develop their skills in using evidence-based approaches in teaching, to inform policy, and evaluate programs within prior-to-school settings.

Early Childhood Development Research and Practice

In this subject pre-service teachers will examine a broad range of leadership styles and management roles in an early childhood context and recognise their own goals for leadership and management, identifying what success will mean in their future professional and personal lives. They will also investigate the issues that shape early childhood leadership such as: policy, legal requirements, political influences, professional ethics and operational management, Additionally, Pre-service teachers will examine advocacy through leadership research and practice and consider ways to advocate for professional and community awareness of the importance of early childhood education.

Leadership and Management in Early Childhood Education

This subject introduces students to the theories and strategies for developing authentic assessment and reporting in early childhood education. Students examine assessment and evaluation as an integral part of the teaching and learning process. They also explore the use of assessment for diagnostic and curriculum development purposes.
