Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Political Science and International Relations

You will also develop the professional skills required to communicate financial advice and ideas in complex collaborative contexts involving finance and investment professionals and clients. You will also have the opportunity to gain practical work experience and career skills development as part of your study that will help you graduate with added skills sought by employers.This program is offered full-time and part-time through Open Universities Australia (OUA). As an OUA student, you are not required to study on-campus. You may complete this program entirely off-campus through Open Universities Australia.

Bachelor of Applied Financial Advice

Financial Planning 1

This subject provides students with a broad overview of personal financial advice and the role of financial advisers in a dynamic environment. Students apply the knowledge and skills covered in this subject to discussions of contemporary issues, such as ethics, regulation, technology and government policy, and authentic financial planning tasks. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 2200AFE: Financial Planning 1 at Griffith University.

An introduction to the processes, rules, and issues relevant to financial advisers. You’ll cover important skills and strategies that form the basis for personal financial advice. Learn to provide tailored and ethical advice to clients.

This subject advances student knowledge and skills in estate planning, from the regulatory environment, including the legal and tax implications of ownership structures in the management and transfer of assets, through to strategies to manage the client-professional relationship in the face of difficult circumstances including family breakdown, bankruptcy and the loss of a loved one. Prerequisites: AFE122 Financial Planning 1 (required) and AFE227 Superannuation and Retirement (recommended). Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3219AFE: Estate Planning at Griffith University.

Estate Planning

This subject examines psychological and social models of behaviour in the context of individual and group decision making. It provides insights into the approaches and perspectives that can be taken to more deeply understand the client-adviser relationship, the advice process and design of financial strategies.

Behavioural Finance

This subject focuses on the application of prior knowledge to the development of the necessary capacity to assess clients needs; prepare, present, evaluate and implement tailored, comprehensive financial plans. Students will also be able to recognise the implications of legal and ethical codes that relate to financial planners and to apply them to their own work activities. Prerequisites: AFE227 Superannuation and Retirement, AFE329 Estate Planning, AFE222 Risk Management and Insurance, and AFE223 Financial Planning 2. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3202AFE: Financial Planning, Construction and Review at Griffith University.

Financial Planning, Construction and Review

This course focuses on developing skills to engage with clients in a real-world context and is delivered by experienced industry professionals via online learning over twelve weeks. This course maps to a number of National Financial Adviser Curriculum core knowledge areas. In particular, we focus on client relationships and consumer behaviour, which includes coverage of the following: Communication in a professional context, providing information about services to clients (FSG, PDS), collecting information from clients and setting goals, understanding self and others, interpersonal communication skills, the importance of client cues and prompts such as body language, tone of voice, how to create and build trust, fiduciary duty, ethical and professional conduct, legislated &#39;client best interests&#39; requirement, risk profiling vs investment behaviour, managing the ongoing relationship and conflict resolution.

Financial Planning Skills

This allows students to complete a mix of internship and elective subjects and cannot be done in conjunction with or in parallel to AFE301 Work Integrated Learning I (40CP). This subject is conducted with students participating in one of two main streams: Role-based placement in industry: In an individual student placement, a student undertakes a professional role in a financial services workplace. Students will couple the practical experience gained while on internship with critical reflection on industry practice and standards as part of their assessment. Students work in close liaison with their industry supervisor and Course Convenor throughout the placement. Project based engagement with industry: Projects are sought from a range of industry and university partners that require students to plan, execute and report on the findings of a research project. Students are involved in a structured research project with industry application under the guidance of the Course Convenor.NOTE: Enrolment in this subject is restricted. Students must have completed a minimum 130CP and have a GPA of at least 5.5. Students who meet these requirements are not automatically enrolled in the course. Recruitment processes, including interviews with industry partners, may be used to assess suitability for this subject. This is a 20 credit point subject.Incompatible: AFE301 Work Integrated Learning I (40CP).

Work Integrated Learning II

This subject facilitates student involvement in a structured Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement or project. Work Integrated Learning I

A major objective of this subject is the generation of retirement planning strategies. Assessment items reflect the challenging demands of an industry which seeks to ensure all Australians enjoy a comfortable and self-funded retirement. Therefore it is expected that students are knowledgeable of technical and regulatory issues, skillful in strategic thinking and analysis and aware of contemporary issues in the superannuation and retirement context.Â 
Prerequisite: AFE122 Financial Planning 1

Superannuation and Retirement

Students explore ethical frameworks and their application to decision-making in financial services scenarios. This subject also aims to further advance students&#39; knowledge and generic skills required to be effective in financial planning including advanced communication topics and leadership in the profession.Prerequisite: AFE225 Professional Identity Part 1 (PLEASE NOTE: AFE226 is a continuation of AFE225 - each subject is only worth 5 Credit Points).Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 2215AFE_Y2: Professional Identity Part 2.

Professional Identity B

The primary aim of this course is to build on students’ awareness of their future employment environment covered in 1204AFE Professional Awareness, and to further develop the core knowledge and skills for them to effectively transition from a student to a professional reflective practitioner. To achieve this aim, the course continues to identify and apply tools to develop students&#39; generic and behavioural skills, highlights workplace rights and responsibilities from both legislative and modern workplace expectations perspectives, and supports the development of a portfolio of evidence for application to internship or graduate positions.
