The objective of this subject is to provide a basic understanding of contemporary issues in maritime economics from the managerial perspective. The main focus is on economic relationships and policies concerning ship owners, shippers, policy makers and other stakeholders in the maritime industry.

Maritime Economics for Managers

Digital disruptions such as the sharing economy have caused major disruptions for the tourism industry – both positive and negative. Platforms such as Airbnb and Uber, plus Airtasker, UberEats and HomeAway, have transformed the way tourists travel, the way that purchases are made, the way in which employees are hired, the way in which the industry is regulated and ultimately the way in which tourism as an industry is regarded by communities. Further disruptions such as big data have challenged norms of research, the ethics of collecting data and have ultimately challenged our understanding of how the tourism industry works. In this subject, you will tackle these issues by exploring the reasons for the rise of disruptive innovations such as the sharing economy. You will assess positive and negative impacts, from a diverse range of perspectives including those of consumers, tourism operators, the tourism industry and policy makers.

The purpose of the subject is to build an applied understanding of the psychological biases which influence financial decision-making. The behavioural finance perspective of decision-making is contrasted with more traditional finance perspectives. This enables a unique interpretation of market anomalies and asset pricing bubbles. Behavioural Finance

This subject provides you with an introduction to behavioural economics. Behavioural economics is a discipline at the intersection of economics and psychology that draws on insights and methods from the social sciences to understand better how people actually make decisions. The aim of this subject is not to be mathematically or theoretically thorough. Rather, it focuses on developing a better understanding of how human psychology affects our decisions and how such knowledge can be applied to real world business and policy issues, including to the nudge agenda. You will also be exposed to methods of enquiry used in behavioural economics, in particular, economic experiments and randomised controlled trials, their real-world applications and the insights they generate. You will develop knowledge and skills to design and conduct such experiments and trials as well as to evaluate newly designed business strategies, public policies and nudge interventions.

Behavioural Economics

This subject provides managers with an introduction to a comprehensive range of key data analysis, statistics, microeconomic and macroeconomic topics. The emphasis is on the practical application of basic statistical techniques, economic concepts and models to real world business-oriented problems and on developing students’ ability to apply the economic way of thinking to solving problems within a firm understanding of the economic environment in which they operate. The use of mathematics and arithmetical calculations are kept to a minimum for selected topics in statistics by using the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet package.

Statistical and Economic Analysis for Decision Making

This subject examines the theories and frequently used techniques of economics, financial and managerial accounting in healthcare organisations. Public and private funding issues will be examined across the acute, primary and aged care sectors. Students will apply this knowledge to determine cost efficient and effective decision making, taking into account safety, quality, resource considerations and principles of value-based healthcare, in general. Students will investigate critical topics and approaches, including funding models; supply and demand factors; economic evaluations, financial statements and working capital cycle; budgeting approaches and key performance indicators; and long-term investments. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry relevant studies and analysis.
