The Master of Creative Writing is designed to extend and challenge emerging writers to hone their craft in a small community of writers. The focus is on developing your creativity and writing skills, and to provide expert training if you are aiming for professional publication. You are encouraged to experiment, hone your craft and to develop a technical vocabulary for critiquing your own work and the work of others. Specialist units in the degree engage with novel and short story writing, creative nonfiction (such as memoir, writing about place, personal essay), poetry, writing for young adults and manuscript development.

Master of Creative Writing

The Master of Writing encourages students to explore the range of writing styles needed to work professionally and creatively in publication industries. Students will also develop their own writerly voice through learning and practice in craft, in theory that enriches their writing, and through research and long form creative projects.
The goal of Swinburne&#39;s writing programs is to teach the writing skills that are needed for success in today’s writing and publishing environment, and to expose students to opportunities for publication.
The Master of Writing forms the final stage in a three-stage nested suite of programs consisting of:

Creative writing involves expression and skills. It also involves reading. This practical unit introduces students to different approaches and ways of thinking about creative writing. Students engage in a series of lectures and workshops, learning a range of creative writing skills and topics. Students are encouraged to be experimental and adventurous in their writing. Seminars address different creative writing topics and readings so that students can learn about various genres, methods and approaches. The workshops are interactive; they aim to increase understanding of the process of creative writing. The aim of this unit is for students to learn, achieve and realise their creativity and writing skills in their creative work, engaging with lecture and reading content and participating in writing workshops, on-course writing exercises, and doing set assignments.

Play with narrative and time as you develop adventurous creative writing pieces. Reflect on your creative process and the approaches adopted by other writers. Experiment with creative writing styles. Place value on the drafting and revision processes.

This subject was previously known as Introduction to Writing.This subject explores representation in writing and how the dynamic relationship between Self and Other plays a central role in the writing process. The representation of the self and of others is central to a broad range of written genres and forms. Students of professional writing will find that the subject introduces them to a variety of genres and forms essential to the portfolio of a professional writer, and will discover how creative writing techniques can enrich their professional work.This subject is NOT an introduction to the mechanics of writing (grammar, punctuation, expression, etc.), but an introduction to the writing profession, publishing and the genres and forms of creative and professional writing.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. An advanced subject which examines the techniques and problems involved in writing long fiction - specifically the long story, the novella and the novel. Students look at the work of a variety of fiction writers from the point of view of the writer who wants to learn how the authors of particular works succeeded. Students devise and carry out their own writing projects in long fiction.

Learn travel writing conventions through short exercises and discussions. Discover how freelance travel writers find work and develop relationships with editors. Develop a publishable piece of travel writing that you could pitch to a publication.

This subject is designed for those who wish to write creatively and focuses on the craft of fiction, and especially the short story. Students will draft and edit two short stories during the semester and provide feedback to other students on their draft stories. We read and discuss selected Australian short fiction in different styles, voices, and genres, and do hands-on writing exercises in class. It provides a theoretical framework and practical skills for writers and readers.

Writing Fiction

This subject provides you with an understanding of technical aspects of writing in various genres, styles and viewpoints in the short story form. You will explore a range of practical, critical and editorial strategies. You will examine aspects of your own writing process in critical depth and also aspects of the nature of creativity and creative skills through reading acclaimed writers&#39; works.
You will have opportunity to develop skills and understandings related to a variety of publishing outcomes and will be provided with a supportive environment for producing a folio of original work reflecting your development during the Study Period.

Craft short stories while taking into account themes, viewpoints and structure. Query short story genres. Take a look at your own writing process and look for ways to improve it. Examine the writing industry and ask how you can break into it.

Learning to write well brings benefits within and beyond university. This interdisciplinary unit offers you the opportunity to strengthen your professional, creative and academic writing skills. We develop a conceptual framework for analysing the writing of others and editing your own work effectively, as well as improving your skills in the generation of ideas, elements of style and identification with the audience. These areas of writing will be explored through modules with theoretical and practical components: -- Academic writing, including essay writing, essay structure, avoiding plagiarism, editing and proof-reading. -- Non-fiction writing across a number of genres, particularly writing for popular media, reviews of the arts and writing for the web. -- Creative writing, which can include fiction, poetry and scriptwriting.

In this subject you will explore a range of poetic styles and approaches. With an emphasis on creative writing that is informed by the discovery and critical reading of poetry, writers will examine and write poetry from various historical and contemporary traditions. These will include such forms as free verse, sestinas and rhyming couplets, through to narrative prose poems and dramatic monologues.
From this subject you will gain a broad understanding of poetry&#39;s history and evolution, with the primary focus of compiling a portfolio of poetic works within these traditions. An emphasis will be placed on weekly writing exercises and weekly discussion of wide reading throughout the Study Period, with the ultimate goal to begin to develop their individualised poetic voice.

Explore the broad church of writing styles that make up the poetic form. Get swept up by sonnets, free verse, rhyming couplets and narrative prose poems. Analyse the role of language and expression. Find out about the poetry publishing industry.
