Graduate Diploma in Health Professional Education

The Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental (OHSE) Management provides students with advanced technical competencies in OHSE theory and practice. The course comprises eight units that will prepare you for a professional-level position in OHSE. The Graduate Diploma in OHSEM is a pathway program to the Master of OHSEM, and is an accredited course that provides students with the educational requirements to seek certification as an OHS Professional.The Graduate Diploma and Masters of Occupational Health Safety and Environmental Management are programs that are accredited with the Australian OHS Education Accreditation Board. This means students who graduate from these degrees will be deemed to have met the OHS qualification content requirement for certification at the OHS professional level (administered by the Safety Institute of Australia).

This subject will empower you to explore and apply a range of strategies and techniques to optimise health professional assessment and evaluation as a learning and teaching method.To that end, this subject will help students learn about and apply educationally sound practices required to design effective curriculum which promote learner-centred education and inter-professional collaboration, in the context of healthcare professional education. Students will examine curriculum concepts, and establish a familiarity with instructional design that focuses on inquiry-based and evidence-based learning approaches.Students will also be introduced to contemporary approaches to valid and reliable assessment of health professional learners, and be provided opportunities to develop and implement authentic assessment items, as well as practical experience in assessment. Finally, students will then critically analyse evaluation strategies to differentiate their anticipated purposes and outcomes, while taking into consideration the ethical, moral and legal issues.The overall aim is therefore to prepare students to optimise the learner and learning experience through the development of theoretically informed curricula and authentic assessment, and provide the skills to evaluate the effectiveness of this learning in healthcare education.

You will explore ethical, moral and legal issues impacting on health professional education, and critically analyse the concept inclusive education in relation to your practice.
To that end, you will first explore teaching approaches and models and theories of learning in the context of contemporary health professional education. You will then explore ethical, moral and legal issues as these relate to your practice as an educator of health professionals. This will include a critical evaluation of your own teaching and learning practice. Scholarly evidence will be combined with practical community wisdom as important sources of your learning.
The overall aim is therefore to provide you with a firm foundation of the theories, applications and priorities informing contemporary health professional education, and support you to relate and apply knowledge to your context.

Theoretical Foundations of Health Professional Education

Adverse events and poor quality care can have a significant impact on health care costs and health system sustainability. This subject is essential for future leaders in health care who need to have specialised knowledge and skill in applying effective quality measures in a digital environment to administer culturally safe health services across a variety of healthcare contexts.In this subject, students will explore the emergence of the quality movement and accreditation and safety standards that have been progressively driven by consumer expectations around safe, quality care, in preparing to become effective health care administrators. This foundational knowledge is required to enable interpretation and evaluation of paper based and digitally supported, quality and safety processes and to develop a repertoire of quality improvement tools used to create strategies that improve quality and safety processes.The aim of this subject is to ensure that students can effectively promote quality and safety leading to better health outcomes as well as cost efficiencies in a variety of health care settings. Managing health care in this way ensures that safe, quality care is a transformative process of continuous improvement that respects the dignity of individuals and contributes to the common good.

This subject is important for students, who are positioned in, or aspiring to, health leadership or management roles and who will need specialised knowledge and skill in evaluating solutions to complex problems associated with the dynamics of organisational culture. In this subject, students will critically analyse healthcare organisations and the management of healthcare staff from within the context of organisational culture. This aspect of health administration will be considered from within a framework of safety and quality and with the notion of a safety-culture being highlighted. Strategies to create safe and supportive workplace cultures will be considered. 
The aim of this subject is to provide students with a sound understanding of theories of organisational culture and the dynamic inter-relationship between the structure of health services and the agency of the health practitioner in order to enable them to implement effective management strategies that are both safe and conducive to quality healthcare.
