Engagement with the creative arts can bring joy, restore self-confidence, improve mental and physical wellbeing and contribute to improving the quality of life for everyone.An ageing population and rising levels of depression and anxiety in youth, the elderly, and people living in rural areas are significant challenges for Tasmania, Australia and internationally. Research is demonstrating ways in which music, visual arts, theatre and other creative arts can contribute to addressing these challenges.The Diploma of Creative Arts and Health offers you an interdisciplinary study experience that is unique. You will gain knowledge of innovative uses of creative arts in a range of community and health-care settings, while developing an understanding of the effects of the arts on brain and body in the social and cultural context. There are opportunities to explore your own creativity and learn about international best practice for ethical and effective implementation of arts programs in both community and healthcare settings.If you are interested in how the power of creative arts can be used to promote wellbeing and better health in a range of community and healthcare settings - then this program is for you!

Diploma of Creative Arts and Health

The Diploma of Ageing Studies and Services addresses the need for holistic knowledge of the ageing process. The Diploma will cover contemporary issues relating to care and services for older people. You will learn about the many social and health challenges that are associated with ageing.This course, developed and delivered by the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, is available through the College of Health and Medicine. Visit the Wicking Dementia Centre for more course information.The Diploma of Ageing Studies and Services is a fully online, eight-unit course which examines the social and biological aspects of ageing; chronicity and multimorbidity; age-related discrimination and prejudice; public health understandings; and administrative processes related to policy and aged care. This Diploma is suitable for those wanting to or who are working with older adults in aged care, health care or related sectors, such as community-based roles and services. The course will bring together the social and health-based perspectives of ageing.Areas of focus include the idea of &#39;care navigation&#39;, policy, safety and health promotion. Content also looks at the rising impact of dementia.

This subject will provide an introduction to existing evidence-based research on the benefits of engagement with the arts, through the lifespan and strategies employing creativity to support better ageing and mitigate risk factors for dementia. The subject offers opportunities for students to undertake creative tasks, develop their own creativity and reflect on the cognitive benefits.

Explore how enjoying artistic activities contributes to peoples’ wellbeing and quality of life. Learn how to engage people in imaginative pieces that communicate their thoughts and emotions—and work on your own creative project too!

Participation in the creative arts has been shown to afford a wide range of benefits to mental health and wellbeing for young and old. This subject explores ways in which the creative arts and play can be used therapeutically to support and enhance mental wellbeing for children, adolescents and younger people. It explores particular challenges associated with life events, neurodiversity, or for those who are from minority or marginalised groups. A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.

Creative Arts, Play and Mental Wellbeing

This introductory subject will explore the physical and cognitive changes that occur during the ageing process, and age-related pathological changes that can lead to diseases that cause dementia. This subject will introduce fundamental neuroscience concepts in the healthy adult, ageing and diseased nervous systems, with a focus on brain structure and function. Throughout this subject, students will learn how to find scholarly literature, and how to recognise and summarise scientific evidence to use in their academic communication.

Practical interventions employing arts-based activities, including music, theatre, dance and visual arts, are increasingly being employed nationally and internationally to improve mood and well-being, physical activity and cognitive processing for people with dementia. Arts-based programs have also been shown to have some capacity to enhance communication of emotions and relationships with carers. This subject will explore the evidence-based research on the benefits that can be conferred through the stimulation of sensory perception, reminiscence and subconscious movement using music, theatre, dance and visual arts. These will be dealt with in three separate modules. Students will develop knowledge of model interventions employing music, theatre, dance and visual arts, and each module will also provide an introduction to key elements of successful program design and the range of activities that can be employed.

Explore how music, dance, and theatre can improve the lives of people with dementia. You’ll review case studies and research for examples of creative activities. Think about your own arts program and how you can influence patients’ wellbeing.

This subject will involve students selecting a research topic related to ageing or dementia for a major assignment and related presentation. The subject area will be negotiated with the academic staff contributing to the subject, and will involve a literature review and analysis and synthesis of research in this area. Students will be required to present their project verbally, and to respond to questions and comments in the online environment.

Negotiated Project in Ageing and Dementia

Research is providing increasing evidence for the positive benefits of engagement with the arts for individual and community wellbeing at all stages of life and can provide a non-pharmaceutical adjunct to health interventions. This subject explores case studies of successful creative arts projects in community settings and discusses appropriate evaluation frameworks for health and wellbeing outcomes. Students will reflect on and evaluate critically a community arts project in their own region and will model the planning and conduct of community arts projects, the development of funding strategies, risk management and ethical conduct, developing creative place-based problem solving through writing a proposal for a project intended to promote health and wellbeing.

Arts in the Community

This subject examines the evidence base for, and the potential impact of, community-level initiatives aimed at (1) reducing the incidence of dementia in the general population, and (2) improving quality of life for those living with dementia. These are classed as public health approaches to dementia. The large- scale impact of dementia on societies, both current and forecast, is surveyed, and used to inform an evaluation of effective public health strategies initiatives designed to reduce this impact. Initiatives investigated include community-wide inclusion and support of people living with dementia and their carers, such as dementia friendly communities and environments, and dementia risk reduction efforts. You will be encouraged to develop skills to explain evidence, arguments and advice on dementia support and prevention in a variety of community contexts.

Community and Public Health Approaches to Dementia 1

This subject examines the effect of policies and systems on the societal impact of dementia, and the effective provision of support, services and resources to people with dementia and the people who care for them, including approaches enabling independent living and optimum health. National approaches to dementia care and health system design are compared and contrasted with respect to current and anticipated needs and financial impact. Students study four modules and a choice of applied modules to tailor their learning to particular interests. Assessments are both online for the content modules, and in the form of written assignments enabling the student to relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Policies and Systems in Dementia 1

This subject will enable students to understand and evaluate research and literature in the neurobiology of dementia, and to use and communicate that knowledge in their own personal context. It covers the major elements of the brain and the functions of nerve and glial cells, including neurotransmission, in order to support the understanding of the degenerative processes of dementing diseases, the relationship between genetics, pathology, degeneration, biomarkers and diagnosis, and the basis of therapeutics which affect the central nervous system. A section on the neurophysiology of pain, a significant issue in dementia care, is included.

Neurobiology of Dementia 1

This subject examines social, therapeutic and environmental factors influencing the health and wellbeing of people with dementia, and their carers. The impact of dementia on individuals, and provision for the rights and needs of people with dementia, are the focus of the curriculum. Students are assessed both online for the content modules, and in the form of a written MyContext assignment requiring the student to directly relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.
