About this subject
Upon completion of this subject , the student should be able to:
- Appraise the evidence for potentially modifiable risk factors for dementia and the best-supported preventative measures and public health strategies.
- Investigate the determinants of health which impact on dementia incidence, diagnosis, prognosis, and resources across the world and potential public health solutions.
- Investigate the societal, health system and economic impacts posed by dementia in a range of global contexts and the implications for public health policy and practice.
- Critically analyse public health and social support provisions of relevance to people living with dementia and those who care for them.

This subject examines the evidence base for, and the potential impact of, public health interventions aimed at:
(1) reducing the incidence of dementia in the general population, and
(2) improving quality of life for those living with dementia. The large scale impact of dementia on societies, both current and forecast, is surveyed, and used to inform an evaluation of effective public health strategies designed to reduce this impact. Strategies investigated include dementia risk reduction efforts, improving dementia awareness and understanding, and making communities and environments more dementia friendly. Students are assessed in a variety of formats to develop communication skills in the public health context.
