Health Policy, Economics and Advocacy
About this subject
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- Apply the principles of economic thinking to challenges facing healthcare systems
- Critically appraise economic evaluations of public health interventions, strategies or policies and how they influence decisions in healthcare policy-making
- Critique health policy development processes and the interplay between drivers, actors and advocacy, within policy change.
- Module 1: Healthcare policymaking: context and challenges (weeks 1-2)
- Module 2: Core economic concepts (weeks 3-5a)
- Module 3: Economic Evaluations in Health (weeks 5b-6)
- Module 4: Applying an economic lens to healthcare policy making (weeks 7-8)
- Module 5: Advocacy and activism (weeks 9-10)
- Module 6: Drivers of public policy development (week 11)
- Module 7: Process of public policy development (weeks 12-13)
This subject will introduce the principles of economic thinking, including core economic concepts and tools that assist healthcare policy decision-making. There will be a focus on exploring the evidence base, context and economic decisions that occur within the process of public policy development. Students will critically examine the complexities of the economic environment and influence of advocacy coalitions using contemporary policy case studies in the healthcare sector.
