About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of foundational theories of how children learn (GTSD 1.2.1);
- formulate, apply, and evaluate strategies and principles for effective pedagogy, including assessment, in an inclusive classroom in the 21st Century, including critical thinking and digital pedagogy; the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT; and understanding of assessment moderation and application to support student learning (GTSD 3.3.1, 4.4.1, 4.5.1, 5.1.1, 5.3.1, 6.2.1);
- analyse teaching skills and create quality learning environments and positive classroom behaviour, including a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies and social media technologies (GTSD 3.5.1);
- apply practical approaches for effective classroom behaviour management taking into account students diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds (GTSD 1.3.1, 4.3.1);
- demonstrate an understanding of the relevant and appropriate sources of professional learning for teachers, and the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (GTSD 1.2.1, 6.1.1, 6.2.1); and
- demonstrate competence during professional placement in a primary school setting (GTSD 3.3.1, 4.2.1, 6.3.1).
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This subject prepares you even further for a career as a teacher in the modern world. You will develop an understanding of the foundational theories about how children learn, and learn how to plan, teach and effectively assess your high quality lessons and learning activities. Premised on the understanding that learning, teaching and assessment are a pedagogical trilogy, in this subject you will develop the skills you need to plan and implement this approach and report the outcomes to different stakeholders. You will learn a comprehensive range of strategies and skills that promote effective teaching and active learning, including how to teach critical thinking skills. You will cover theories relating to the use of digital technology and social media in your classroom. This subject introduces you to a small number of classroom behaviour management techniques that will raise your awareness and help you successfully prepare for and complete 15 days of professional experience in a primary school.
Assessment 1: Online Task: 500 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1, 3, 5, 6.
Assessment 2: Online Task: 1000 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 4.

Professional Experience: Students are required to obtain a 'Satisfied Requirement' (SR) in order to successfully pass this subject. Relates to Learning Outcome 6.- Assessment 1: Online Task - 500 words (20%)
