Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate foundation knowledge of the underlying principles, theories and concepts of: a) the history and philosophy underpinning the science of psychology, b) neuroscience and the biological bases of behaviour, c) lifespan developmental psychology, d) learning, e) memory, f) perception, g) motivation and emotion, and h) consciousness;
- apply the concepts, language, and major theories of the discipline to explain psychological phenomena, with the ability to communicate this effectively to others;
- develop foundation knowledge in the following core topics in Psychology: a) neuroscience and the biological bases of behaviour; b) lifespan developmental psychology; c) learning; d) memory; e) perception; and f) motivation and emotion;
- analyse and critique theory and research in the discipline of psychology and communicate these in written format;
- demonstrate foundation knowledge of appropriate values and ethics in psychology; and
- correctly employ the American Psychological Association (APA) structure and formatting conventions.

Equip yourself with research and analytical skills that are invaluable in many contexts and build a broad foundation in the principles and methods of the science of psychology. Studying this introductory psychology subject, you will explore the concepts, methods and major theories of the discipline, gaining insights to explain different psychological phenomena. A range of core topics in psychology are examined, including cognition and language, intelligence, personality and individual differences, psychological health and wellbeing, psychological disorders, evidence-based interventions, social psychology and cross-cultural psychology. You will also have an opportunity to develop transferrable skills in data analysis, critical evaluation, communication and referencing. Note - PSYC101 and PSYC102 are prerequisites for enrolment in second year psychology subjects. They may be studied in order, or concurrently in Trimester 3.
Assessment 1 Two (2) Quizzes: 400 words per quiz. Assessment note: Multiple choice, matching exercises and fill-in blanks. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-5 Assessment 2 Written Assignment: 1500 words. Assessment note: Topic area is Motivation and Emotion. Relates to Learning Outcomes 2, 4-6 Assessment 3 Research Participation Opportunities: 200 words. Relates to Learning Outcome 4. Final Examination: 2 hrs 15 mins. Assessment note: Multiple Choice. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-5 There is a supervised exam at the end of the teaching period in which you are enrolled. The exam will be offered online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. Coordinated by UNE Exams Unit. UNE manages supervised exams associated with your UNE subjects. Prior to census date, UNE releases exam timetables. They’ll email important exam information directly to your UNE email address.
