Interventions for Family and Community Violence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Contexts

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the causes and impact of family and community violence within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
- demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical and practical approaches to interventions in family violence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
- identify the importance of community development work associated with violence, crisis intervention, and prevention; and
- describe the needs of families and communities in terms of the recovery and the healing process.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
Candidature in the Bachelor of Criminology.

The subject explores the intergenerational causes and effects of violence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It examines best practice pathways to recovery including theoretical, counselling and community development approaches while maintaining a culturally appropriate framework. A consideration of the needs of families and communities in terms of recovery from trauma is central to students' learning across the subject.
Assessment 1: 2000 words; Assessment note: Written assignment examining forms of violence and assistance available, and barriers to seeking help. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-2 Assessment 2: 1000 words; Assessment note: Online activities: Participation in online forums relating to topic specific content. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-3 Assessment 3: 2500 words; Assessment note: Written intervention program examining needs of individuals and family members where intergenerational violence is evident. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-4
