Exploring the Sacred
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding that there are different approaches to the study of religion in the academic context, and provide a meaningful and coherent answer to the question 'what is religion?';
- demonstrate an understanding of various key concepts used in the analysis of religion;
- display analytical and research skills through indepth study of specific issues or challenges associated with investigating religion by means of written assignments; and
- display well-developed communication skills through their assigned work.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
What is religion and how should we study it? In this subject we explore various disciplinary approaches to these and other questions through an investigation of such fascinating phenomena as: sacred myths and rituals; belief in the unseen and otherworldly;the problem of evil; religious persons and communities; sacred time and sacred space, as well as the very concept of the sacred itself.
